Winter sun 4-6hr flight max

Thinking ahead to next winter, where is the best place to go for winter sun that is no more than a six hour flight?

I’ve done the canaries before and that was nice - but is there another destination I should consider? And if the canaries are best, which island?

Thanks so much!

Cape Verde
Cyprus

Done both in the winter time (as well as Gran Canaria) all have been lovely

AdriannaP · 26/12/2021 10:12

Dubai
Mauritius
Mexico (7 hours I think from Heathrow)

TheFairyCaravan · 26/12/2021 10:13

Cape Verde. We did it in March one year, it was very hot but windy.

StormBaby · 26/12/2021 10:15

Cape Verde. It’s the same temp all year round. We didn’t find it too windy when we went in December

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 26/12/2021 10:21

Cyprus won’t be nearly warm enough.
In addition to above: Azores, Gambia, Egypt, Jordan, might get as far as Goa.

notimagain · 26/12/2021 14:13

6 hours from the London, gate to gate, rules out a few of the above suggestions..

Furthest East: Somewhere like Jordan or Israel but weather can be variable….anywhere actually in the Gulf is usually a bit over six hours; for example Dubai on a typical day/flight is typically about seven hours from London..

Furthest South unless you want a holiday in the desert realistically somewhere on the North or north west coast of Africa, e.g. Tunisia or Egypt…

South west - Canaries, that sort of area.

You won’t get anywhere genuinely transatlantic that’s warm and Sunny in under six hours from the UK

@AdriannaP

Dubai Mauritius Mexico (7 hours I think from Heathrow)
Just for info Mexico (City) is about a twelve hour flight from Heathrow, Mauritius is similar…
Eggsandavo · 01/01/2022 13:26

The Gambia - 6 hour flight from Gatwick and guaranteed sun all season 😊

GoodnightGrandma · 01/01/2022 13:27

Fuerteventura is the best Canary island . Beautiful beaches.

Deisogn · 01/01/2022 13:31

Bermuda will take you 7 but much nicer than a lot of the other suggestions.

Courcheval · 01/01/2022 13:33

Egypt.
We went to Marsa Alam a few years ago for New Year, it was warm and sunny every day. The locals were walking round in Puffa coats though while we were in swimwear 😂
Marsa is lovely, not too touristy like Sharm and great for diving.

Also maybe Gran Canaria, we stayed in Mogan last time which was lovely.

superram · 01/01/2022 13:35

The Gambia is a short flight but it’s the worst holiday I’ve ever had and I’d never go back. Exploitation of the locals was rife and taking a few exercise books and pencils didn’t offset that.

zafferana · 01/01/2022 13:38

Marrakech is interesting, exotic and sunny.
Been to Playa Blanca in Lanzarote and Mogan in Gran Canaria and liked both.
The Gambia is supposed to be very nice.
Madeira is also an option and low 20s in the winter, like the Canaries.

jackstini · 01/01/2022 13:51

I would do Egypt
Guaranteed sun, approx 5 hour flight and some incredible hotels

Who's going - just you, any DP/DC?

I feel so sad that you've had such a bad experience in The Gambia. I've been 8 times and I'm married and have kids with a Gambian. I think if you went with the attitude that you needed to take a few pencils for the poor then you'd come back with that experience rather than seeing people for people.
Scarydinosaurs · 01/01/2022 14:57

All the above is really helpful! Thank you!

It’s for a big group ages from 85-5. Not so worried about it being hot hot - just warmer than here would be good.

Waterpark all inclusive would be great for a big group - loads of options in Sharm el Sheik or Hurghada/Makadi

We loved Cape Verde
Not much to do to be fair, although we did go snorkelling, paddle with baby sharks, see baby turtles and visit salt flats one day. It’s mainly a swimming and chilling place with not a lot of cultural stuff but for a week it’s great.
We felt very safe but it IS a 3rd world country and a lady we met at the airport had needed medical help and she said it was a bit scary
We had a beautiful suite in a 5 star hotel for under £4K AI for 4 so very good value and the flight was under 6 hours with a short transfer at the other end
We would certainly go back, considering it for Christmas next year in fact.

I think Madeira is a good shout. It will be pleasantly warm in the day, somewhat variable weather but you'd be unlucky not to see the sun. There are marvelous gardens in Funchal that you can reach by cable car, nice walks and stuff. No swimming at thTat time of the year, the waves are very high. It's a beautiful, dramatic-looking island, and you do feel rather far away and a bit long ago.
