Private transfers from airport to hotel and back again? Pros please

We have always used the free coach transfers included in our package holiday when we go on holiday.
This time we are thinking about getting a private car transfer to pick us up from the airport and take us to the hotel and back to the airport on departure day.
My reasons so far are:
It's actually quite a reasonable price for both ways.
It will be quicker to get to your hotel as apposed to waiting on the coach while they wait for everyone to get on, and then drop off at all the different hotels before you get to yours.
Will beat the queues when we arrive at our hotel.
Now this is the main pro- We always find that the coach never picks you up from your hotel to go to the airport on departure day early enough! It's literally a mad rush times you've been round and picked everyone up and got to the airport there's barely enough time and with Covid and QR codes I'm thinking it will be beneficial.

So anyone who's ever used a private car transfer can you hit me with your thoughts and pros and cons please?
Thanks!
Just for context the price is £28 each way so £56 in total.
Any help much appreciated!

I literally just got back from holiday and used a private transfer both ways. One of the major benefits for us was that our resort was a long way from the airport so we didn't want to add any more time to an already long flight and drive.

It's a no brainer for me! Apart from the cost, I don't see any downsides (and that price seems ok). There's so much less waiting around and wasted time, the journey to and from the airport will be much quicker. We've done it the last few times we've had a package holiday and it was much better. Also if you're travelling with young kids they will provide car seats so safer than on the coach too. Go for it!

Well worth the cost , do it you will not regret it

We always use private transfers, mainly because we stay in villas so no hotel coach anyway. To us the cost is just part of the holiday, we usually end up with a minibus for 4 of us, nice and comfy and takes us straight to where we need to go.

Also, do any users know a good private transfer company based in Portugal, please and thank you 😊

I always use private hire to and from airport. Much less stressful and quicker!

We tend to book separate flights and accommodation, so no included transfers in any case, but we always prebook a transfer for when we arrive. I love it because they will already have the address/location in the booking and I don't have to worry about directions, is this the right place, cost etc. I don't like arriving and having to figure out a taxi or local bus routes.

For return to airport, we either book a transfer or get the bus or a taxi if it is handy to do so. So normally only prebook the arrival transfer and decide on the return during our stay.

We used these guys in Portugal, a few years ago - they were good to deal with

There are no real cons. We've always used them especially since having dc. If you're heading to a resort you don't have to wait for people who've lost their luggage/are having a quick cigi/going to the loo, you just go. When you get there you don't have to rush off the bus to beat the queues. On the way back you leave when you want to and can also either time it to arrive before or after the airport queues. We always find the buses leave too early and we don't like being at the airport for too long.

Only negative i can think is you occasionally get a crazy driver, may be country dependant. Also, sometimes they're a lot more than you're being quoted but still worth it most of the time.

Would also recommend using private taxies and paying entry fees for excursions etc rather than going in a group.

We (nearly) always do this and have never had a bad experience. We generally first ask the first/last hotel we stay in for a recommendation.

Aposterhasnoname · 23/11/2021 11:45

Worth every single penny for the reasons youve already listed. Do it, you’ll never get the bus again.

rookiemere · 23/11/2021 12:14

Definitely go for it. Another good reason is you'll not be in close contact with loads of people on the bus so less covid risk ( although you'll have been on the plane with them)
Oh and another pro you'll get there before any coach arrivals so check in should be quicker to the hotel.

I guess a potential downside is that if there's any issues with the departures coach it's the responsibility of the travel rep to sort out, whereas if you are doing it yourself it's on you. I guess if it hadn't arrived by the time the coach got there, you could just take that. Again I'd book it super early for shorter queues on check in.

Georgyporky · 26/11/2021 18:07

Make sure the package company know what you're doing - otherwise the rep with the coach will be having kittens & you'll be delaying all the other holidaymakers why s/he tries to find you !

gogohm · 26/11/2021 18:13

I've just got back from holiday and used the coach, second hotel to be dropped off. Last to be picked up and got to the airport 2 hours before flight and had tons of time. Also hardly any wait to check in as hotels aren't very full

We always find that the coach never picks you up from your hotel to go to the airport on departure day early enough!

I usually complain about the opposite. I always wonder why I'm being picked up at 3:15am for a 45 minute drive to the airport for a 7:30am flight. But then the bus visits 6 other hotels and there's always someone who overslept (or isn't back from spending their last night out drinking).

You could also consider just getting into a taxi on arrival, without a reservation. In most countries they are on government-regulated meters (or there is a flat fare from the airport to any hotel in resort X). They usually cost about the same as a private transfer, plus you won't have the hassle of rescheduling your meetup with them if your flight is an hour late and they had another customer to transport in the meantime. Some people don't trust foreign taxis much, but with everyone now having Google Maps it's pretty hard for them to drive round in circles to bump up the fare.

MissAmbrosia · 21/11/2024 21:05

I always do this. There is nothing better than being met by someone with a sign with your name on who takes you exactly where you want to go. When I go away with friends it's usually equal or not far off to us all getting the bus or train or whatever. Though will often get the airport bus back depending on how straightforward it is. Cons are you are reliant on them to turn up - but I have never had a problem. I did have one who was 15-20 mins late to go back to airport, not good for my nerves, but in fact we were still there in plenty of time.
