Athens

Found some cheap flights to Athens for early December - is it worth going? How many days? Is it nice? (is it safe?)

Of course I know about the old monuments etc but what about other things?

No kids - just other half and me.

We had three nights, two full days in Athens and IMO that was plenty. Much of the city is modern and pretty ugly, but the ancient Greek stuff is definitely worth seeing and we enjoyed it a lot. We had a day doing the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum and then a day in Monastiraki doing the Agora, the Roman Forum, browsing the shops, people watching. There's a good view of the city from the top of Philopappou Hill and it's not a particularly strenuous climb.

I went to Athens in September and I loved it. I went for six nights and felt like that wasn’t enough personally. I loved the rawness of the city but can see how others might not like that and the food was delicious and cheap. I found it extremely safe!

We also did day trips outside of the city. We went to Stavros Niarchos Centre which was wonderful to wander around and spend a few hours.

I been various times and I love it! I am a fan of ancient history so loved Cairo too! Athens is an ancient city so not laid out like younger cities like New York. The food is fabulous and December won’t be freezing, my dc were sea swimming in Athens there last week!

We might go at Easter and combine with three nights away from Athens on an island or somewhere else on the mainland. Does anyone have ideas of where that second stop could be?
