I have been waiting 6 weeks for my sons new passport, it's a renewal so I didn't expect it to take this long, is this unusual?

Thats what they are claiming the average turn around is, but to allow 10 weeks.
So id hold off a bit longer. Can you track the application using the application number?

I ordered a first passport and it was just over 5 weeks from application received to the passport arriving

Are you going away soon? I just renewed my daughters and it took 31 days but that was with repeated calls to the office - they do sah they will take note of your travel date and ours arrived just in time.
