Where to go in May half term?

We would like to go abroad in May for a week - our only experiences of travel are either long weekend Europe city breaks, 4+ weeks travelling to and around NZ and Australia or week long in the UK so we feel clueless.
We would like to go away for a week so probably Europe. We would prefer to self cater. We aren't the type to sit on a beach; we'd rather explore and have adventures. Our children will be 14 and 12.
Can anyone better travelled than us recommend somewhere I could research? TIA

Andalucia, up in the Alpujarras mountains. Look on eg Vrbo for rentals. The temperature should be in the low 20s, lots of walking, for all capabilities. Pretty little villages, day trips to eg Granada. You can get good value flights to Malaga.

Lake Garda in Italy is great. Its huge so I just explired one area. There is gardakand for teens but the restoration the time just explore lovely towns. Your dc could choose where they'd like to go. Stay at desenzano end and there is a train to Venice and verona from desenzano. In May the open air opera at verona might have started so that would be a great experience. I'm thinking we will go next may!

You could also try lake como (stay in the centre so you can get about easily I think we stayed in menaggiobut there is also bellagio and varenna. Need to be reasonably near the car ferry.
