We’re thinking about going in 2 or 3 years but I can’t decide whether I actually want to go or not. I realise of course that I have to make my own mind up but I’d really appreciate some input from people who have been

I thought it was depressing and awful. Much preferred epic open spaces like Grand Canyon and monument valley

LividLaVidaLoca · 18/10/2021 13:32

I wouldn’t make it the only focus of my holiday. I did a few days at the end of a longer tour and that was enough.

Pootles34 · 18/10/2021 13:32

Yup I hated it too, but it is meant to be a great base for Grand Canyon etc. as supercritter says. It depends if you like the hurly burly of a city?

I think Vegas is very marmite, thankfully I got to go with work so didn't waste my money!

Noshowlomo · 18/10/2021 13:32

I didn’t like it although it was 10 years ago I went. Went to LA first and loved it, so calm and chilled and then Vegas was this onslaught of gambling, drinking and it was boiling, far too hot. Can’t really chill in Vegas as you always have to be doing something- gambling or shopping. I wish I had done a helicopter ride but otherwise I wouldn’t go again.

mumjustmum · 18/10/2021 13:33

I really loved Vegas, but it was a 'girls' trip and I was 30. We did a lot of drinking, sleeping, and ... drinking.
I wouldn't go now with my kids. It's SO SO hot, and I didn't see much that was family friendly, however I didn't have children then, so I wasn't looking for that.

OldScrappyAndHungry · 18/10/2021 13:33

We did two days as part of a much longer trip. I loved it but was happy to leave after two days. It’s a CRAZY place! Grin

mumjustmum · 18/10/2021 13:34

It's also insanely expensive

OldScrappyAndHungry · 18/10/2021 13:34

We took kids @mumjustmum but as I said didn’t stay long. They really enjoyed it - especially the rollercoaster Grin.

DressedUpAtAnIvy · 18/10/2021 13:35

It’s weird. It’s the holiday equivalent of only eating McDonalds for a week. You could combine it with San Francisco and LA and drive between them.

GailTheFish · 18/10/2021 13:35

I enjoyed it, but had had my fill after a couple of days - we did it as part of a longer 2 week road trip from LA up to Yosemite and then down to Vegas.

user1497207191 · 18/10/2021 13:35

It really depends on what you like doing. We stayed there for 2 days/3 nights as part of a long road trip that included Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, San Francisco, LA, San Diego, Flagstaff and Tijuanana. That was fine for us as we just wanted to see Las Vegas and a couple of days did it for us. We wouldn't have wanted to stay any longer as we aren't into the gambling etc. Horses for courses really. We're glad we've been and seen it but have no intention of going back.

megletthesecond · 18/10/2021 13:36

It's fine as a base for the Grand Canyon and Death Valley. The fountains are lovely to watch too.
Apart from that, it's weird. Basically a sodding great big motorway through a street of glossy hotels.

LemonMuffins · 18/10/2021 13:39

Didn't like it. Was only there for two days thankfully. It lacked any of the glamour I expected and I'm haunted by the grubby casino carpets.

Simonjt · 18/10/2021 13:40

I didn’t like it, it was dirty, food was poor (even in expensive restaurants), plus we really shouldn’t be supporting areas that are such an ecological disaster.

Afoxtail · 18/10/2021 13:40

Two days is enough then move on to the Hoover Dam, Death Valley, etc.
I’m glad I visited, but it’s got a really grim underbelly.

bruffin · 18/10/2021 13:43

We stayed a couple of days as part of a road trip. Would go back for a 2 or 3 days as a road trip again, but not for longer really. It was fun but i hated our hotel. I have friends who love it and go regularly.

zafferana · 18/10/2021 13:46

Agree that it's a good base or stopping off point on a longer trip. I've been twice and would only go back on that basis.

For instance, you can fly direct from the UK, so if you want to go some NPs it can be a good place to arrive in and leave from. It's amazing to drive to in the dark too - you're driving through flat endless desert and suddenly it appears, this neon monstrosity lighting up the sky. IMO it's one of those places you should see once in your life, but a day or two is plenty.

Daisydoesnt · 18/10/2021 13:47

We've been twice - both times as part of longer trips. For all the reasons that PPs mention, it's really not the sort of place you could make your only holiday destination.... it's just too "much". Once was as part of a two week trip staying on Cape Cod; we then flew to Phoenix and drove up through Boulder, Hoover Dam and to Vegas for three nights; we ended with a week on the beach in CA. The second trip we flew to Vega (I think?) for again three or four nights, then went on to San Diego, LA & San Fran. The point I am making is, it's great for a bit of variety and contrast in a longer trip, but I wouldn't want to spend a week there.

It's also mega expensive and you really want to be in one of the best hotels on the main strip. It's not the sort of place were you can husk it in one of the budget places a long way out of downtown. It would be defeating the point of that kind of holiday.

Spidey66 · 18/10/2021 13:48

Like pp im glad I went but didn't like it. It's Blackpool in the desert. Tacky +++

If you do go, dont make it the focal point of your trip. 2-3 nights should do it.

Horses for courses though, my husband's best mate loves it and is always ravingv about it..

ChrissyPlummer · 18/10/2021 13:50

I got married there and met up with an old friend I haven’t seen for 20 years. That aside, it’s “Blackpool with sun” to quote my DF. My friend doesn’t like it, but can’t move due to US custody laws.

The one big positive for me is the humidity is very low so my hair was well behaved Grin

Chihuahuacat · 18/10/2021 13:51

Going against the grain but I loved it! We spent 6 nights in total, but broke it up with a night in the middle at the Grand Canyon national park.

The hotel rooms are amazing and you can spend a couple of days exploring the strip, we saw a cirque du soliel show and had a few pool days, shopping, the big wheel, aquariums etc.

We went in May and the weather was about 28 - 30 degrees so not boiling.

(Couple, no kids)

TeapotCollection · 18/10/2021 13:51

Interesting. Thank you I really appreciate your help everyone

We were planning on going in the winter when it’s not so hot, but it would just be a week there, nowhere else. Sounds like that’s not the best of ideas

OP posts:
endoflevelbaddy · 18/10/2021 13:56

We had a week there for friend's wedding, so there was a group of 10 (no kids) and we honestly had a blast.

We didn't do much gambling, but did shows, shopping, exploring, Grand Canyon, river cruise, hen and stag parties (shooting, go karting, zip wire, pool party). We were all 35-45 with kids at home, and it was manic and hot but a lot of fun. Had a long leisurely pool day in between the hen / stag and actual wedding to recuperate a bit.

JKDinomum · 18/10/2021 13:56

We spent two days there with kids which was fun but enough. Unless you want to spend a lot of time and money gambling or watching shows, probably not somewhere to spend a week. A few days there and a couple of days at the Grand Canyon is a good mix.

shoelaces1 · 18/10/2021 13:59

I liked it but had low expectations. Found the food excellent & liked the canyon.
