We went for five days, by day five we were bored. It also is not cheap to do properly, on top of hotels etc. I would budget a minimum of $200 per person per day spending money, ideally more and definitely more if you plan on doing trips such as flying to the Grand Canyon, or a helicopter flight up the strip etc. If you want to do any shows you will almost certainly need to book them in advance, you might get lucky and get a discount on the day, but equally you might not be able to get tickets before and often pre-booking through your hotel is cheaper anyway.

I think it might be different if we were younger, or single, or into pool parties, but that would have been even more expensive.

I liked the weather, didn't party or gamble. Just relaxed by the pools & enjoyed some shows/sights.

Cheermonger · 18/10/2021 14:06

We went for 5 nights and enjoyed it. I wasn’t that fussed but enjoyed it more than I thought. We went on a helicopter trip to a bit of the Grand Canyon which was amazing and hired a car one day and drove to Death Valley/Hoover Dam. Walked miles and miles, saw a show, went to Gwen Stefani, ate fab food. I had a great time - loved the old town and the people watching. Though it was unseasonably cool when we went which possibly made us more active

shoelaces1 · 18/10/2021 14:11

yes people watching is fab there

I've been a few times, all in my 20s and always with a big group of friends who liked to party. It was generally lots of late nights and too much drinking. It especially helps if a few of your party are regular gamblers in Vegas (and have player cards) because they can gets lots of perks from the casinos for your whole group (e.g. VIP access to clubs). Definitely stay on the strip in one of the main casinos. We found The Flamingo to be well located but much less expensive than the more modern hotels; however, this was more than a decade ago, so take that recommendation with a grain of salt.

If you live in London, you'll see far more talent in the west end than at any shows in Vegas. For me, as a life long east-coaster, Broadway would always win out over Vegas shows (unless you have a favorite star doing a run there, of course).

2-3 days is generally enough. I don't really recommend LA either, but you could fly to the California and drive along the coast. I recommend flying to San Francisco and driving south -- we drive on the right in the US and driving south down the coast keeps the scenery on your side of the road.

Final note: I wouldn't take kids to Vegas and I don't think of it as a romantic trip either. A big party with your friends, that will work.

dancemusicsexromance · 18/10/2021 14:13

Adored it, we broke our trip up with NY after a week and it was perfect.
Loved exploring and people watching. The hotels are out of this world.

Verite1 · 18/10/2021 14:16

It was OK to visit as part of a longer holiday. I would not want to visit as a destination in itself. In fact I have vetoed it for an upcoming girls trip.

AmDillDandin · 18/10/2021 14:18

I can't I'm afraid.
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

BikeRunSki · 18/10/2021 14:23

Agree with this. We flew into Vegas, spent the night and following day and night there, at the beginning of a 2 week fly-drive around Nevada, Arizona and California.

BikeRunSki · 18/10/2021 14:23

It's basically a larger scale Blackpool but 10x more expensive and with more junkies.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 18/10/2021 14:26

I adore Vegas! It's just so different to many other places, but we did the helicopter and lunch at the bottom of the grand canyon, did a few of the cirque shows, a well known comedian, did a ton of people watching, theres some good exhibits, like the titanic one, or the mob museum, and the atomic museum, thd neon museum etc

We also found the food excellent, not necessarily the most expensive= the Best, we did alot of research first! The bellagio lunch buffet was excellent and affordable compared to their evening cost.

Its not a kid friendly place imo, but it was really fun for Few days of escape!

EatSleepRantRepeat · 18/10/2021 14:26

I spent 4 days there and loved it, but that was 8 years ago now. Vegas changes so much and the hotels get renovated/rebranded so often that you're much better off finding someone who has been very recently for an opinion.

I loved it because a lot of things were open late night like the malls and I'm very much a night owl. Forget going outside in the middle of the day in Vegas though, the desert heat is unbelievable and most locals stay indoors in the aircon. There were some fantastic high end restaurants, guided trips to the Grand Canyon, Lake Mead which usually go early morning to beat the heat.

It can be very expensive, especially when you factor in additional charges for room service, and tips expected literally everywhere. It's somewhere that flashing the cash does get you good upgrades and better service so I wouldn't do it on a strict budget.

20viona · 18/10/2021 14:28

We have been 7 times and it is by far my favourite holiday destination. You've got the weather, shopping, amazing hotels and pools, gambling, amazing restaurants and world class shows.

Soggychip · 18/10/2021 14:32

God I hated it. Like being in a theme park. I felt like if you walked round the back of the buildings they’d be like the ones on a film set. It felt grubby and desperately sad somehow. Whatever time you go into a hotel there’s people staring dead eyed sat at slot machines. We went in April and it was boiling and humid as hell. Thank goodness it was just one stop off and we saw other things that made up for the awfulness of Vegas. The Hoover Dam, Yosemite, Sedona, Death Valley, Nevada and Area 51. The helicopter ride over The Grand Canyon was incredible. Like being in a cross between Star Wars and Tomb Raider.

EatSleepRantRepeat · 18/10/2021 14:33

Sorry remembered one more thing - prostitution is very open in Vegas because Brothels are legal in Nevada. Its the only place we've holidayed where people would hand escort calling cards to my husband in the street in front of me, and we saw a lot of hookers going in and out of the hotels late night/early morning. It may not bother some people but its another reason that would put me off going with kids.

Yellow85 · 18/10/2021 14:37

Loved it. Went as a couple, drank mimosas by pool, are amazing food, drank yards of big Fat Tuesday cocktails whilst walking around, shooting range, helicopter tour of canyon, champagne picnic in canyon and watched David Guetta at the Wynn. I absolutely loved the old school piano lounges - on in the palazzo was my fav.

It’s defo not a relaxing holiday, but it’s an experience! And not a cheap one 🤣

Lunaballoon · 18/10/2021 14:40

As others have said, one or two days max.

We got married at one of the cheesy wedding chapels, as part of a wider US road trip covering San Francisco, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon and Death Valley.

I’m glad we visited, but once you’ve seen all the bright lights, there’s not much else.

RockyisMYRhino · 18/10/2021 14:44

I went a few years ago for a wedding - wasn't really bothered about going otherwise. Stayed on the strip in one of the smaller hotels (compared to Caesar's Palace for example) for a week and absolutely loved it! We planned lots of things to do they weren't on the main strip like shooting guns, a few museums etc (at least one thing per day) and there is still stuff I would like to have done. We are kind of planning to go back once the DC are older. We went in October so while it was still lovely and warm it wasn't oppressively hot.

zafferana · 18/10/2021 14:46

Just think about what you like to do on holiday OP and then maybe focus on those answers that seem to be in line with your own preferences. Do you like to go nice clubs and lounges? What about West End style shows? Do you enjoy theme parks? Shopping? People watching? Hanging out by the pool and drinking cocktails? Do you have a bit of money to spend? Because that's what Vegas is good for and if that's your idea of a good time, then you may have a fabulous week.

Guineapiggiesmalls · 18/10/2021 14:54

Going against the grain here, but we loved it. Went as a couple pre-kids, stayed in the Palazzo for a week and had an absolute ball. We planned something for most days, like flying to the Grand Canyon or visiting the Neon Museum and for the evenings too, like Cirque du Soleil or seeing a concert (our visit coincided with Pitbull’s residency, which was an experience if nothing else!).

The food is out of the world, as is the shopping. We spent an absolute fortune, but honestly had a fantastic holiday despite not really expecting to! Stay in one of the top hotels (Wynn, Encore, Palazzo, Venetian or Bellagio) and you’ll have a terrific time, and see less of the seedy underbelly that people mention.

nanabow · 18/10/2021 15:05

I thought I'd hate it. I'm usually an outdoorsy person and didn't really like New York. But I actually really enjoyed spending the day by the pool then heading out for a show or just to soak up the atmosphere in the evening.

One thing I would say is that you need to be willing to spend the money on a hotel with a pool, going to shows (which aren't cheap), and trying out different restaurants. If you turn up without much spending money then I can impatient I being a pretty dismal holiday.

We did 3 nights, and I think anymore than 5 nights and the novelty would have worn off.

gogohm · 18/10/2021 15:10

It's ok as a base, the hotels are good and casinos are interesting for people watching, lots of museums, shows etc. There's amazing natural sights around, Grand Canyon, Zion National park, Death Valley are easy drives away. Hoover Dam is good and can be combined with the Grand Canyon.

Personally I would suggest a 2 week road trip taking in Vegas for a couple of nights unless you have money to burn at the casinos etc. It's certainly worth experiencing though

QforCucumber · 18/10/2021 15:11

We did 5 nights, got married there and really enjoyed it but wouldn't rush to return.

The hotel rooms were fabulous for the price, We only gambled a little, we saw a couple of shows, a couple of DJ's, ate in some amazing restaurants. Had a trip out to the Grand Canyon, it was just DH and I so a mini get married/honeymoon trip. It was a fab experience.

We did February 2019 - it snowed hah!

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 18/10/2021 15:13

I went 20 years ago and didn't even gamble! Was part of longer trip and just spent 2 nights there (Treasure Island) at start of trip and 1 on the return leg. We got upgraded to a mega suite in MGM Grand on the one night stay. It's worth a look, so long as you don't fall for the hype.
