Le shuttle and driving - where to go in France in Aug?

I was thinking of staying north - Brittany and/or Normandy but the weather is putting me off.
Where else might be good? Do we need to drive all the way south for sunshine?
We were recommended Ile de Re but I think it will be rammed over Aug.
I'm just after a low key pretty spot to chill out, explore. Maybe a beach nearby would be good, but not definitely needed.
Two kids 5 and 8.
Normandy appealed because I read it's good for antique and bric a brac rummaging! And Brittany because it's a bit like Cornwall. Not bothered by cities.
Love the idea of Provence but perhaps July is when to go, and too busy? Don't know much about anywhere else....Loire? Dordogne? Would these be too far to drive?
We'd have 10-14 days.
