Child passport renewal times

I think we've made a huge error. My son had just shy of 6 months left on his passport and we were due to travel to Spain on 22nd October. Having read the government advice it was stated he needed 6 months left on his passport. I sent off the application and old passport last week and have now read horror stories of passports taking at least 5 to 6 weeks. Has anyone renewed recently. I will be gutted if we can't travel. Apparently you can't switch to fast track services now either.

I applied for my son's passport 23rd August, the new one arrived 17th September. So that was pretty quick. We didn't fast track it either.

4 weeks for child's online renewal received new one last week.

Itsanewdah · 02/10/2021 15:15

ours came back today - exactly 1 month.

Mamamia35 · 02/10/2021 16:05

Applied 19 Aug, received 18 Sep.

Sorry to jump onto this thread but I need help! I'm currently completing a child passport renewal form for DD, and I have to put down my details in section 4 and DH's as we are her parents. On the form it states that as I was born after 1983, I need to give MY parents full details in Section 8 ( this seems a bit ridiculous to me) but then in the guidance booklet provided with the form, it says the passport office only require's the grandparents details if BOTH parents were born after 1983, DH was born Pre 1983. Can anyone help clarify this for me please! Thank you.

FurCoatNoNickers · 02/10/2021 20:49

Thank you both

FurCoatNoNickers · 02/10/2021 20:49

Sorry wrong thread!

Gonewiththegin · 03/10/2021 11:37

@FurCoatNoNickers I would send an email to this address and ask for clarification [email protected]

You can tweet them and call but I found this the most effective way when I had a query.

It was be great if people could post updates.

I am waiting on 2 passport renewals for both my children and no further update since 23rd Sept, keeping everything crossed as due to go to Portugal on the 23rd Oct....

Mamamia35 · 04/10/2021 14:44

Ours was the same. Went quiet for a couple of weeks and then it appeared.

I wish Boris would get on and introduce change from PCR to LFD tests for the day 2 return.

Campervan69 · 04/10/2021 20:40

Ours took 4 weeks from beginning to end. Arrived today.

Missmissmiiiiiiiiisss · 04/10/2021 20:41

Our children’s renewals came back a week ago, it took exactly 5 weeks.

BigPyjamas · 04/10/2021 21:02

3 weeks from them having received the old passport

tyson2007 · 04/10/2021 21:07

It's interesting to see all the timelines. It really does vary then.

I am going to hope that it's closer to the 3 weeks!

ShipwreckSunset · 04/10/2021 21:20

Had a text today to say it had been approved, that is 3 weeks after they confirmed as received. Hoping we get it back this week! Child renewal online at Bootle.

Stickystickystick · 04/10/2021 21:21

From what I have seen most people have said 3 weeks from when old passport received is about right for when they receive their new one.

OP posts:
gogohm · 04/10/2021 21:22

I got my new one 5 days after they received it.

Stickystickystick · 04/10/2021 21:33

@gogohm which office was this please? Was it a renewal recently?

OP posts:
jd1025 · 04/10/2021 21:34

Has anyone done a child first passport through the post office recently? If so how long did it take?

honkytonkheroe · 04/10/2021 21:38

My sons has just had his renewal back. On the 1st September they contacted the person verifying it and he replied the same day. I immediately then sent the old passport back and they text me saying they received it on 7th September. On the 28th September they text me saying it had been approved and I received it the next day.

tyson2007 · 05/10/2021 07:11

Mine was sent to the Belfast office, I wonder if some are quicker than others 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Polly99 · 05/10/2021 10:45

I've got a child renewal in the Belfast office. It is 4 weeks 2 days and counting. Tracker still says "being processed". Very frustrating!

tyson2007 · 05/10/2021 11:05

@Polly99 oh no! that doesn't fill me with hope of getting it before my holiday :-(
I am so annoyed with myself for not checking they were in date, I am normally so good at things like that. I blame Covid for 'freezing me in time' and making me forget that a year went by.......

Polly99 · 05/10/2021 12:39

Yeah, I'm not thrilled with the situation. Only positive is holiday companies seem quite reasonable about moving things. A couple of years ago if this had happened I would have lost ££.

tyson2007 · 05/10/2021 12:58

@polly99 have you tried calling them for an update or do you not have a holiday booked that you need it rushed for?
