Hi

I've just been awarded one of these for my AmEx spend. Any tips for the best use of it? Is there any unobvious catches? We would like to use it on our next US trip (when covid allows!).

Sometimes the taxes and fees are higher than a flight to places like New York. I have one to use too.

Use it on a long flight and maybe for a higher class than you would normally travel.

Fantastic benefit - although our flights keep getting cancelled at the moment, so we have several vouchers about to expire!

Disappointedly I've just read that from 1st sept I can only use it in economy - due to my card being a classic one 🙄

Oh OP I know you couldn’t have known but next time, upgrade your card to the black one before you trigger the £10k spend. The credit card fee is pro rota so you could cancel it as soon as you trigger the £10k spend. Go onto Flyertalk and they can give you options there.

Unfortunately sometimes economy fares can be cheaper with other airlines! Make sure you use it in long haul. How many Avios do you have?

Hairbrush123 · 04/09/2021 14:22

Also when did you trigger the £20k spend?

sleepykits · 04/09/2021 14:46

@Hairbrush123 oh no! I wouldn't even have thought of doing that. TBH though I didn't realise the rules had changed or that the trigger amount had been reduced!

I was very surprised this morning when I had an email with the companion voucher Grin

At the moment I have 35,000 Avios but should be double that by the time we use the voucher.

Remember you can buy airmiles from BA - you need to look at the figures to see if it's worth it, but it can be.

Keep an eye out for the next time BA does the 50%-extra free deal when you buy Avios

We spent £900 on avios and got 2 return flights in business class that would have cost us £5k if we had paid cash instead of using avios plus a companion voucher

I’m excited reading these posts. I have 60,000 points at the moment, a companion voucher and a black card.
