Moving school holidays from August

I found this petition on the UK government website to move school holidays to earlier in the year to get better weather. Sounds like a good idea! It's been a shocking August.

I've been thinking about this too. June / July has much better weather.

The end of term is always full of gorgeous, hot days. August is such a let down 😩. I'm not sure how I feel about changing the school year, but for better weather it could be worth it. I've signed!

Yes I can see why moving the end of the summer term would be positive for holidays (especially UK breaks).

It would make the winter term a very long one though. How does Scottish education deal with a longer autumn/winter term? Do they have a 2 week half term or earlier Christmas break?

haggisaggis · 19/08/2021 10:07

In Scotland, depending on council area, schools get a one or 2 week break in early October and break up for Christmas usually around 22nd December.

In Scotland my kids get a long weekend in September ( called the September weekend!) And a week in October (called the October week). They break up for Christmas on 22nd December this year i think

Thanks haggis. My kids are shattered by the end of the winter term - staff always look pretty exhausted too. But a decent summer holiday might make up for that.

Notonthestairs · 19/08/2021 10:16

I guess we'd use our end of August Bank Holiday in a similar fashion to your September weekend.

PoscaManosca · 19/08/2021 11:57

That could work.

54321nought · 19/08/2021 11:59

silly idea, all the teens needed on the family farms in August would just take August off anyway, we already have to move the school day to much earlier in the summer to accommodate children needed on the farms in the afternoon

54321nought · 19/08/2021 12:00

I think people hugely underestimate the size of the farming community, and their needs.

This is why summer holidays were in August to start with

54321nought · 19/08/2021 12:01

In fact, with no EU workers, farmers are likely to be relying on family help even more than usual

chipshopElvis · 19/08/2021 14:08

@54321Nought how are the scottish farmers managing?

Zodlebud · 19/08/2021 15:12

What about people that work in the large car production and other manufacturing companies too? They all have their summer holidays in August and some production lines close down entirely so it’s not as easy as you might think. Nice idea though.

No, I'd prefer England/Wales kept to their end of JUly pattern.

Because it means that those of us in Scotland benefit from quiet UK holidays for most of July, and if going abroad can save money by flying from an English airport.
