Last Minute Car Hire

Just booked a last minute break to Canaries flying out on Saturday. Car hire sites quoting over 2k for a week car hire (usually just a few hundred) so i'm wondering, has anyone just booked on arrival and what kind of deals can you get? Thanks!

Have you tried booking through Autoreisen ? They exist in Tenerife ( not sure about other Canary Islands) and are usually the cheapest and most reliable vehicles.

We have hired at the airport on occasion but not with pre hire costs that high. You might be cheaper to uber everywhere.

I was also going to say check Autoreisen when I read the OP. They're also on Lanzarote at least as well as Tenerife, but I think they might be Canaries wide.

Do you need a car OP? I think for that price I'd leave it and use the excellent buses and occasional taxis unless it was going to ruin the holiday to not have a car, eg if you have a villa away from the main centres. I do know that on Lanzarote and Tenerife at least there are regular bus services to the main coastal resorts from outside the airports.

Also see if you can get a small a car as possible or even two small cars instead of one bigger one if there's more of you and luggage to fit in a small car. We usually get a Polo sized one and only ever pay £80-100 pw.

There is a shortage of cars on the islands ah the moment as lots of companies had to offload stock to ensure they didn’t go busy last year. We managed to get one but had booked weeks in advance. Join the islands ‘need to know’ groups on Facebook which may have tips. I agree tho… in Lanzarote certainly public buses are brilliant and taxis cheap x

It's the same in the UK, prices are mental.

Prices for car hire have rocketed everywhere.We had a USA trip cancelled last October.Out of curiosity (still can't travel to USA) we priced the car hire for equivalent dates this year and the price had tripled 😲

I checked car hire in Tenerife for October when we are (hopefully) going based on this thread. Same standard £100 for a week it's always been ( must book now so I don't miss out)

Thanks everyone! No joy at all there def is a real shortage on the island... just booked coach transfers & will see if we can book a day or 2 from the resort (Playa Blanca)

You might find a local place when you arrive. I decided not to get a car last time I went to Tenerife and changed my mind after a couple of days and found a tiny rental place by googling.

I use the booking facility on Lanzarote Information… Mike is great. It might be worth emailing him for any cancellations he’s aware of?
