Kaprun or Zell am See - anyone been in Summer?

We're thinking about this as a summer holiday as DP doesn't like it too hot, and the Med is too hot in July/August. However, after a hideous holiday in Somerset last year, where it rained every day, we're thinking Austria may be a good compromise. The weather looks reliable, quite hot, but as Zell is on a very cold lake there's ample opportunit to cool off. Plus there's glacier skiing etc. Is it as good as it looks and if it is why doesn't everyone go there?? Any thoughts much appreciated.

I would n't say mountain weather is reliable - can be hot but stormy with heavy showers and snow at altitude or very grey. Having said that we've had some great summer mountain holidays, not there though.

We went to St Johann which is not far away in August a couple of years ago, we were lucky with warm weather all week, quite hot towards the end of the week, BUT the week before it apparently rained all week. So no guarantee! We had the best holiday ever there though - it is so beautiful and very geared up for children.

Spent a month in and around Zell am See a few years back and it was utterly fab. Yes a few truely spectacular thunderstorms, but beautiful weather, scenery, food....

We went to Ellmau (in the Tirol, far side of Soll) a few years ago, weather was hot and sunny (30 deg c plus) at beginning June. Food was pretty good - a fair amount of veggie/Italian options, not just alpine stodge. It was great, very scenic, reasonably child friendly (lots of hotels/restaurants have mini playgrounds), we'd go back to Tirol area any time.
