We're doing a trip in jan from bangkok through malaysia and ending up in Singapore. We'd like to round off the trip in style with a plush hotel, near MRT station, nice pool area for 2yr old dd, and nice room with a balcony for us to escape to when (and if) she goes to bed.

Can anyone recommend anything, prefarably not heading too far past £100 pn? thanks.

Have a look at the Shangri La. They have three different sorts of rooms and their Garden wing rooms have a balcony. It has lots of green space and a very nice pool area and the water is actually warm when you step into the pool (there is a pool for children which is roped off from the main pool). The Line restaurant there does all sorts of food for breakfast and dinner. Its about a ten minute walk from Orchard Road MRT.

www.tripadvisor.com has reviews of many of Singapore's hotels. Would be worth reading those before making a final choice.

yes the shangri la was my first choice but its showing up about £170 a night now. Tripadvisor is a cursed blessing because I think I have it sorted, only to check the hotel on there and find it's got bad reviews or low ratings....
Do you know anything about the swisshotels merchant or mandarin oriental?

Did you try their website directly or Hotels.com?. Hotels.com were doing rooms at the Shangri La for just over £100 a night.

A friend of mine stayed at the Swisshotel merchant and liked it althought it has received some very mixed reviews on tripadvisor (noise problems mainly). The other hotel you mention is a bit out of the way.

I stayed at both the Shangri La and Raffles Plaza in August. Out of these two the Shangri La was the best by a mile in terms of room, pool, room service, staff attitude etc.

Yes i have been reccomended shangri la before and it looks stunning. Hotels.com are showing 161 a night for garden wing, probably because of time we'll be there, mid week at end of feb. But perhaps we'll blow the budget for the last few nights. Thanks for your advice. R.

Hi,
try www.asiarooms.com
they have the best deals in the region. We live in singapore and use them everytime we travel.
don't worry about being near MRT. taxis are dirt cheap compared to UK standards. A ride is usually about 1 london undergraound zone 1 fare!

slim22 · 26/11/2007 01:45

PS: remember chinese new year is 6/7/8 feb this year so prices shot up around that time as it's a public holiday.

If you do decide to blow the budget, I would heartily recommend the Marina Mandarin. It's not near the MRT but taxis in Singapore are ridiculously cheap. We have stayed their with our three kids three times now and they just adore it (my 4 year old has cried every time we left). The staff are fantastic with kids and the pool and bar area are gorgeous. There is a food court just accross the road on the river where you get great, cheap, food in a really buzzy atmosphere. The last time we went I contacted the hotel directly and got a rate that included their amazing buffet breakfast for the same price as was advertised for room only online.

you could try looking here, we are going to stay at the Marina, next year www.valuestayinsingapore.com/index.html

One of the girls in singapore recommended the site to me.
