Where to travel on a family holiday

Hi all

So I am looking for ideas for my next years holiday. We will have a 6 year old and a baby under 1. Looking anytime in the school holidays. I am looking for a nice beach, lots of things for the children, nice restaurants and great nightlife. I would just like to go somewhere with lots going on. I don't want to stay in the uk, I really want to go abroad. Any suggestions?

Hi mlj,

My 2 are now 11 and 9, but we've taken them abroad every year since the eldest was a toddler.

Some key points:

  • Try and make everything as easy as possible, even if it means forking out a few quid for convenience
  • I don't recommend long flights (over 3 hours) if they're really young
  • Always go for a family hotel with a kids pool, evening kids entertainment etc
  • check weather averages for when you go, if it's too hot then the holiday becomes a chore as you'll need to constantly tend to the baby's comfort levels :)

We've been to the following:

  • Malta (DB hotel chain is quite good for families)
  • Menorca (the Zafiro hotel chain is really good)
  • Majorca (as above)
  • Portugal
  • Crete (Try the Mitsis hotel chain on any of the greek islands)

Thank you I will definitely check out these suggestions. So far we've taken my ds to Benidorm, protaras, Tenerife and Bournemouth . They are all great for families especially Benidorm we love it and went twice a year before covid. We've just booked again for may next year. My dd will be 8 months old then (same age as my ds when we first took him). I just want to find some new places to go. Looking at going away twice next year and really wanna go somewhere different (but just as good) and I'm struggling to find somewhere.

Cascais in Portugal has loads going on and is close enough to Lisbon for day trips.
Cala d’Or on Mallorca
Saint Gilles Croix de Vie in France

I’m confused by wanting great nightlife with a 6 and 1 year old in tow?
Otherwise I would recommend Menorca.

I was thinking they'd either get a sitter or maybe just being out and about with DC in the evening. Not everyone puts them to bed early in the evening before sitting in the hotel room whispering in the dark.

OP, any of the Balerics would probably suit you and there's a good few places on each island, so you'd probably be set for a good few years holiday from those alone.

Hi thanks for all the suggestions I will definitely look into all of them. Yes we take the mil with us and she will look after the children now and then, and take them to bed when they want to ( never early though as we are all on holiday) but I love to find things to do with the kids in the evenings too. Cabaret bars for families with entertainment, arcades, Benidorm and Cyprus also have fun fairs open until the early hours. I loved taking my ds to the fair then ice cream at night. We usually have one or 2 late nights after the children have gone to bed just the 2 of us, usually on a Friday or Saturday.
