DH has immediate family in Alberta who we would like to visit when we are allowed to.

However as it isn't an obviously holiday destination and we have two primary school aged children so wondered if anyone had any hints tips on where to go/where to stay and when to go school holiday permitting!

Thanks in advance. Hoping some locals may be about to offer advice.

Alberta is huge, which part are his family in? I live in the next province over but travel there regularly to see my best friend who lives there permanently so we'd be happy to advise.

Alberta is amazing! For primary age kids, Banff national park, the Royal Tyrrell Museum (dinosaurs!) and the Badlands off the top of my head. That's all within a few hours drive of Calgary, and I'm pretty sure there's still a big waterslide park on the city outskirts. I liked Calgary, nice downtown and riverside. There's the West Edmonton Mall amusement park but Edmonton is a bit grey otherwise. Bear in mind though it's been almost twenty years since my last visit to the province and my impressions of the cities are dated.

If you have enough time, you could make it an open jaw trip, fly in to Calgary, see the relatives for a week, then slowly drive a rental car down through the Rockies and the Coast mountains to Vancouver, and fly back from there. BC is even more amazing and beautiful (I'm totally biased, being from Vancouver Island).

What part of Alberta? its huge!

Calgary Stampede in July
Banff National Park
Badlands/ Drumheller
There are so many lakes ( + watersports- you can rent a boat, seadoos etc)
Drive into BC ( again, a zillion lakes)
Houseboat on Sicamous Lake

It is big though, and people often don't realise how long it takes to travel between places

Thanks for the replies. I think the vastness of the region is making me feel overwhelmed. The family are on the outskirts of Edmonton.

May is lovely in Albert's, not too hot not too cold.

Lake Louise is beautiful. Jasper, Banff and Calvary are lovely to road trip around, go see the Hoo Do's (sandstone structures), check out the Tyrell museum.... Lovely!
