Lariam - Will I be charged at the pharmacy for collecting a prescription.

Having been informed by the GP that there will be a #10 pound charge for each prescription (2dc), I want to know if I will have to pay an extra charge at the pharmacy and if so will it be per prescription or per tablet. I usually get these anti-malarial tablets at the travel clinic but am now pushed for time as I lhave left it to the last minute. Any idea which would be cheaper?

You should pay the GP for the private prescription as you say, then you pay for the tablets at the pharmacy, prices vary but its around £25 for enough for a 4 week holiday plus your 4 weeks after. HTH

Sorry meant to say clinic prices vary aswell but they will inflate their prices to cover prescriptions aswell so may be much of a muchness!

God sorry also should have read 2 week holiday and 4 weeks after !!

You shouldn't usually pay a GP for a private prescription, but you will pay the true cost of the medication plus the pharmacist's dispensing fee. That can vary between pharmacies so ask around if you have time.

I am very surprised if your GP charges for the actual script, nowhere I have ever worked does this.

LaylaandSethsmum · 19/11/2007 22:43

They should charge for a script as this is a service outside of the NHS, the GP can't claim for that script so therefore should make a charge.

DD had to have a private scrript in June £10 and then £48 for the malaria tablets at the chemist.

Which ones are you getting and I can look up the price in my BNF

Sidge · 20/11/2007 16:28

Where I work they don't charge for the script.

Must be one of the few things they don't charge for!

temmy99 · 21/11/2007 18:16

Thank you all for that. Alibubbles, I am getting the Lariam and I have been to the travel clinic who charged me £7.50 for the script and £26.00 for 8 tablets. I asked at the pharmacy how much they would charge per tablet but they said they need to see the script first which I think is stupid as I would have to pay for the script which was what I was trying to avoid. If you know anywhere cheaper for next time. (Going away again soon) let me know, thanks.

If its not too late, is there any reason why you are getting Lariam. It can have some very unpleasant side-effects, and Malarone is a much better drug.
