son internship to Greece?

Josie1968 · 25/05/2021 22:17

Hello there

My son is arranging an internship to Greece in June and I can't help feeling worried due to the current situation and the fact that Greece is currently classed as an Amber country.. I'm worried about whether he will get travel insurance also..

He is going to be doing a diving internship. He is doing exams at the moment so as I've got a day off tomorrow I said I would ring around a few insurance. companies.

Any thoughts or advice appreciated.

Thank you

He will need specialised insurance anyway with him going diving over there so I think you will get insurance it will just be expensive. The only problem with being an Amber country is isolation and testing when he gets back but the rules might have changed by the time he comes back anyway.

@Hellocatshome thank you, I will ring around today Smile

Why isn't he organising his own travel/dive insurance???

He needs to specify what type of diving he will be doing

Old enough to travel, but not old enough to do his own insurance?

Josie1968 · 29/05/2021 17:38

@M00n0nastick628 he’s more than capable of sorting his own insurance. At the moment he’s in the middle of exams, revising, and sorting out everything else to do with his trip - sorting flights, ferry, buying equipment etc. The least I can do for him is offer to take care of the insurance for him.

I agree with pp, he needs to organise his own insurance.

Just out of curiosity...why?!

People on MN seem to think once a child reaches 16 they should do everything themselves with no help from their parents. I for one will still be helping my kids with stuff if they need it whatever age they are. I mean he is hardly incapable of doing things for himself if he is going to Greece alone to do his internship.

I can completely understand you wanting to help and checking his plans etc; but if you book his insurance, make sure he knows what’s included/excluded/how to claim etc. It’s really valuable to know that up front rather than have to look it up if something happens.

EG we had to contact ours last year when flights back to the U.K. from where we were were cancelled, even though we weren’t due back so weren’t affected. Some need contacting if where you are goes into lockdown, or if someone tests positive, etc.

Good luck to him!

Ah, he'll have a fab time. I spent a few months living on a Greek island as a youngster, and it was some of the best times of my life.

I have no useful advice though. Smile

You sound like a good mother OP. Not sure why posters are insisting he sorts insurance himself.

If he's diving I assume he'll be on one of the islands/near a beach town? I understand your concerns but it's hard to find a place in the world right now that isn't a risk. To avoid risk, he could postpone until next year but it sounds like he is set on going.

There are different levels of diving that have different types of insurance, which is very important for an extreme sport

Will it just be him diving or will he be teaching other people ?

You can get insurance that covers other sports too

Also need covid insurance

Josie1968 · 29/05/2021 22:01

@Hellocatshome I know.. 🤷‍♀️ me too, I’ll help my kids as much as I can for as long as I can. As you say he’s more than capable.. my thinking was that I’d rather him spend his time and energy on his studies and exams rather than ringing around insurance companies!! 😊😊

@TakeYourFinalPosition thank you. He’s downloaded the insurance app onto his phone so has access to the policy 😊 so is able to check what’s covered.. but you make a good point. Because the government is recommending only essential travel to Greece it won’t cover anything Covid related so I am concerned about that.. I don’t imagine an internship is classed as essential.

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal I’m glad you had a good time! For me.. I’ll be relieved when he’s home safe again!! 😅😂 but I’m sure he’ll have fun.. he’s looking forward to it 👍

Just don't do what my mum did - I was supposed to ring her every day to "check in." I missed a day - so she reported me Missing to the British Consul!

Josie1968 · 29/05/2021 22:13

@Maria53 yes he’s on one of the islands. And yes he’s set on going, been wanting to do this for a while now. My husband says there’s a risk in everything we do.. which is true I guess. He’s a sensible lad. I’m sure he’ll be fine .. but yes I’ll definitely be glad when he’s home again!! 😅

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal oh no!! 🤣🤣 I’ll try not too. I don’t think he’d ever talk to me again if I did that!! 🤣🤣

@M00n0nastick628 thank you. Apparently everything diving related is covered by the diving organisations own insurance. I couldn’t see any insurance that would give Covid cover as travel has to be ‘essential’ and assume an internship isn’t classed as essential. I’m hoping things lift further before he goes, and that we get the go ahead to travel to more countries for leisure purposes.. 🤞

How long willhe be staying?

Will he need a work permit? Work visa?

Post Brexit UK nationals are no longer allowed to work in EU countries without the correct paperwork.

Josie1968 · 29/05/2021 23:11

@oystercatcher44 he’ll be there 3 months as far as I know. Pretty sure he will have checked this out but will double check with him thank you!
