Which is your favourite European city break?
mumma24 · 04/03/2021 17:51
Hi, I’ve only visited 2 cities in Europe. Paris and Salzburg and loved both. If you could only choose 3 cities which would you choose to go again. (Would be lovely to know why you’ve chosen these) Thank you

Porto - art nouveau, chilled white port, azul tiles and the Riberia
Reykjavik - Icelandic humour, Northern Lights, crisp winter air, Lava beer
Lisbon - Fado, trams, seven hills

We loved Palma...lots of art and culture. Stayed at Nakar Hotel which has a rooftop pool with views of the cathedral.

Seville
Dubrovnik
Lisbon
So hard to choose so honourable mentions for Venice (definitely), Palma, Cascais, Verona, Barcelona, Bologna, Malaga. I just love a city break and cannot wait to start doing them again.

I haven't done many city breaks, but I too adored Paris. I also love Edinburgh, and when I went to the Czech Republic I didn't do Prague, I did Olomouç in the Moravian region. Close to Christmas, enchanting place, wonderful Christmas market. I absolutely loved it. Cheap as chips too.
Csx99 · 04/03/2021 19:04
I absolutely loved Krakow. Nice and cheap with lots of history, you won't run out of things to do
Ninkanink · 04/03/2021 19:06
Copenhagen (But that’s Home so I’m rather biased...)
Warsaw
Venice
I’d absolutely love to visit St. Petersburg.

It's not somewhere I would have ever thought to go before DH started working in Latvia for a couple of days each year - he's a specialist engineer so his company sends him out there to service equipment for a big client. He went alone for the first 3 years but since then either me or DS have gone out with him.
Riga is absolutely beautiful. Stunning architecture, fab museums and galleries and amazing restaurants and bars. It had started to feel a bit like a chore but we really missed going there last year due to Covid and it isn't likely we'll be going there this year either. Seriously, put it on your list of places to visit. You won't be disappointed.

Venice, Budapest & Rome.
Would literally give anything to be getting on a plane to one of those!
Avondklok · 04/03/2021 19:12
Rome
Seville
Budapest
But I find it really hard to choose. Used to love Prague but it's a bit overrun/overpriced these days. Love Barcelona but have been lots of times. Other faves - Munich, Bratislava, Granada, Leiden, Cologne, Nice, Montpellier, Krakow, Wroclaw, Ghent, Bordeaux.....god I could go on forever. I hate not being able to travel!

Budapest every time (infact I've been about 5 times), especially in winter but beautiful in summer too.
It's clean, people are friendly and there's tonnes to do. I love the food, though probably better for meat eaters.
I wasn't impressed by Barcelona, Venice was pretty but we went in Feb so was very damp and cold.
Would.love to go to Croatia some time.

Seville (best at Easter)
Vienna
Toulouse
I also liked Bruges and Barcelona
TH22 · 04/03/2021 19:40
Vienna & Salzburg - breathtakingly beautiful! Went at Christmas. Food was amazing. Beautiful building and scenery. Just very magical!

Can't believe no one has mentioned Athens
We went last year as it was one of the only places you could go without isolating
The weather was fantastic, beautiful hotel right in the centre with a rooftop bar with views of the Acropolis, food was amazing. I can't wait to go back
travelmad · 04/03/2021 19:52
Budapest - hands down my favourite city in the world - very affordable, rich history, great food, loads to do, friendly locals.
Ljubljana - really small but a lovely little city with easy links to Lake Bled, Predjama castle, Postojna caves.
Bruges - beautiful and fab food/drinks (chips, chocolate and beer for the win!)
Honorable mention to Dubrovnik too :)

Agree with Athens too, I always feel safe there (even when they were blowing up the US Embassy)
Also a lot of the Balkan capitals like Sarajevo, Pristina, Podgorica, Banja Luka are interesting cities for a weekend.

London is probably my favourite city. So much to do and see there. I never ever get bored going (before covid we went at least 7 times a year)
Leiden (much nicer in my view than Amsterdam)
Stockholm or Barcelona. Love both of them although Stockholm is ridiculously expensive
