Daft question about passports

Is there any advantage in renewing a passport rather than letting it lapse for a couple of months and then applying? I’ve just realised that the kids passports expire in March. DS is 17 so will need an adult passport, DD will be 16 in may, and given we have no plans as yet to travel, I’m thinking it would make sense to wait and get her an adult passport then, unless there’s a good reason not to?
Thanks x

Makes no difference, given the current situation probably best to wait and renew them when travelling goes back to normal (however there might be a backlog of people doing the same?)

As namechanged....says if you've got no plans to travel there's probably no advantage ATM to renewing early...

If OTOH there's any danger at all of somebody needing to travel in a hurry (e.g; family emergency, extended family abroad etc) then it's worth bearing in mind that nowadays an increasing number of countries (including I think those in the EU) won't allow an individual entry if their passport has less than 6 months validity remaining.

HTH.

One bonus is there is a really really quick turnaround at the moment.

DD's passport expired in July, but we haven't bothered to renew it. She doesn't drive so doesn't have any kind of current photgraphhic ID, so we may renew it just for that reason.

TBH I find it irritating that most places that require photographic ID will only accept a passport or driver's licence.

That's why I had to renew mine.

I might just do it while she is home from university then. Hopefully I can get some decent photographs of her.

Thanks all, prob worth waiting until she’s 16 then xx
