Holidays
August - Caribbean, Mauritius or somewhere else?
bendmeoverbackwards · 30/11/2020 18:49
Looking to book a family holiday for next August 2021. We've been to Barbados before which we loved but we went at Christmas and the weather was great. I'm not sure if August is a good time for the Caribbean, isn't it hurricane season?
Thought about Mauritius, has anyone been and how did you find it?
Or any other similar recommendations please?

We would also consider a US fly drive but want to avoid extreme temps!
Tigger03 · 30/11/2020 18:52
I think August is hurricane season in most tropical places.
You might be ok in Mauritius (we went in December and loved it) but worth double checking weather.
getmeavodka · 30/11/2020 19:07
I got married in Barbados in Augusts few years back. It was very humid and did rain quite a bit. The weather is much better there at Xmas to be honest.

We're off to Mauritius in August 2021, we've been before in August, Sept and October. August is the start of their summer and it does get better later in the year. Stick to the west side of the island (Flic en Flac, Trou-aux-Biches) as the east gets more rain in August.

Actually just checked, I didn't realise Mauritius was so far south, Aug temps only look around 21-22.
Looking for temps in the high 20s ideally.

Bali?. Or The Maldives? Some good deals on these at the moment, given the current situation.
Tigger03 · 30/11/2020 21:15
We stayed in Zilwa Attitude - it was lovely, food was fabulous.
Think it was about 28 when we were there, but felt waaay hotter due to the humidity, would recommend!

We’ve booked Bali and Lombok for august 2021, fingers well and truly crossed. There are some fantastic prices out there. August seems to be a good month for weather.
We’ve been to Mauritius in august and found it to be like a good English summer day. The pools were fairly cold.

A big benefit of Mauritius is the kids clubs, always free and open late into the evening.
bendmeoverbackwards · 01/12/2020 09:02
Bali looks lovely. Should have said my dc are older teens so don't need kids clubs.
@Fedupofballs who did you book with?
Virgin were doing great Black Friday deals but they ended last night and it seemed too much of a rush to book. I want to book early to avoid a post-vaccine price hike!
Fedupofballs · 01/12/2020 10:29
We’re doing it ourselves. Booked premium economy flights with Lufthansa (changeable) and then hotels etc through booking.com. The trip advisor forum has done great advice on where to stay. We’re (hopefully) doing 5 nights in ubud, 6 in Amed, 3 in gili air, 3 near mount rijani (Lombok), 5 in south Lombok and then flying back to Bali for 3 nights in sanur. I love planning trips and browsing the hotels and locations has been loads of fun. I just hope we get to go!!!!

We went to the Seychelles in August last year - had a fab time. Four different islands / DC loved it.
Shadowboy · 03/12/2020 19:32
We went to the Maldives in August- gorgeous weather and water was clear for diving.
bendmeoverbackwards · 04/12/2020 10:33
Thank you, they all sound lovely! Maldives look amazing but more expensive.
Think we might consider short haul now for the summer but look again at Mauritius at Christmas.
SJaneS49 · 07/12/2020 22:28
Appreciate you might already have made the decision to go short haul but have you considered Costa Rica? Lots of adventure type activities for teens, an abundance of wildlife and great beaches. We went in August 4 years ago - it’s rainy season but only in practice was one big thunderstorm a day usually in the afternoon or evening that would last about an hour. It’s cheaper then too!
RainingBatsAndFrogs · 03/01/2021 10:09
Mauritius is boiling hot and extremely humid at Christmas.
Always feels hot in August.
altiara · 03/01/2021 21:11
Mauritius isn’t hot in August. Can also be rainy. April is usually lovely.
bert3400 · 02/04/2021 21:41
@Tigger03 we stayed at Zilwa too. The most amazing hotel . Favourite holiday ever. Would love to go back soon
shivawn · 03/04/2021 17:54
I much preferred Mauritius over Barbados, we did amazing hikes with incredible views, the beaches, food and people were all amazing. Barbados is full of crowds of day trippers from cruise ships and really caters to American tourists. I went in March to both of them.
I got married in August and found it difficult to find a good honeymoon destination that has great weather that time of year. We went to Bali and Japan in the end. Bali was pleasant weather wise but is very busy that time of year, we'd normally avoid travelling during school holiday time though so I guess everywhere might be the same! Japan was freaking boiling, we climbed Mount Fuji which was a great experience, Tokyo is a cool city!
Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico might be okay for August, should be hot without being too wet. It does have a seaweed problem that time of year though.
I've been to Peru in August too and had an amazing time if you want something more adventurous. We hiked the Inca Trail and stayed in the Amazon Rainforest. Depends what you're looking for really.
Hawaii is great too but really expensive.
