I fancy going here myself and thought it might be a good one with a 3.5yr old and a baby in a sling - obviously am envisaging a crisp, clear autumnal day rather than grey, p**ing down with rain day!

WIll be visiting from Scotland so would want to overnight - so anyone with any recommendations for staying nearby - preferably somewhere child-friendly - would travel a little further away if somewhere was especially nice/picturesque etc.

Ooh just down the road from me. Will go and have a think and a search then come back with some ideas!

OK back already! The trouble with living here is you don't really think much about hotels in the area.

How about staying in Holmfirth? It's about a half hour drive away and although a bit touristy, there's plenty of pottering to do and no doubt lots of hotels.

Just don't stay in the nearest hotel - the Black Bull at Midgley. It has a local reputation for the swingers who meet up in the Sculpture Park carpark on a night

Oh I went there earlier this summer and it was fantastic. A huge park (you'll need some pushchair assistance for little 3 year old legs) with lots of great art and room to play.

We spent a happy half day there which left us all nicely tired and uplifted. Just don't miss the Deer Park Enclosure (can't remember the actual title of the installation, but it is stunning!)

The people at the YSP are normally lovely. If you give them a ring then I am sure they will be able to recommend places to stay.

Wow thanks everyone - Sarah in partic. It's great to hear first hand experience. I've been a big fan of Andy Goldsworthy for years and his installation and exhibition runs until January 2008 so I have to get myself there soon knowing how time flies. Thanks for the tips about the swingers hotel - that could have been interesting!!

There was a hotel I found nearby when I did a quick search on the net - don't know if it look s family friendly exactly - called the Old Manor House in West Bretton Wakefield - any experience of that one (preferably not after a nite in a Vauxhall Astra at the Sculpture Park!!) Cheers!

Have never heard of that glasjam, but if it's in West Bretton then it's certainly near!

We had a great day out there a couple of weeks ago - in your ideal autumnal sunshine All family enjoyed it, pushchair friendly - you could walk for miles though so wear v comfy shoes!

Friends have stayed and eaten here. It's not that close to the YSP, but probably about 30 mins or so away. BUT it is very close to Eureka in Halifax, which your 3.5 year old would love.

EllHell · 30/10/2007 00:10

Eureka
