Very tempted to book Turkey for this month. Wondered other people’s thoughts/experiences of travelling abroad?

@FearlessSwiftie it was passport-photo-software.com/ xo

Sweetener12 · 24/08/2020 12:49

@ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress I know!! I was soooo worried about the whole thing, it seemed like a never ending story. They definitely have to make clearer rules.

SJaneS48 · 24/08/2020 13:01

@BringMeTea “ Lol at Daily Mail as deliverer of facts. grin”. Yep (and quoting the Torygraph too!)

ScarMatty · 24/08/2020 13:26

Circumstances mean we cannot go anywhere this year Sad but even if we could, probably wouldn't anyway in the middle of a pandemic. So perhaps it's for the best. Normally we'd have something booked for September/October but I'll be lucky to have a couple of nights away at my mum's house Sad

Good luck to those who are going away though.

We went to Iceland at the beginning of August. Our holiday had been cancelled previously but things were opening up. It was a great chance to see Iceland without the Americans and cruise ships.

We took a calculated risk. We bought insurance that covered Covid, all of us were already WFH and I have plenty of food and a milkman so quarantine wasn't an issue.

We bought N95 masks for the airport and plane - fine to wear for a few hours.

We stayed in Apartments with keys in a lock box and self drove so minimal contact with anyone else.

It was a great trip, no regrets.

Follow benkersben on twitter for updated data

The Europa site uses the 14 day figures which aren’t right as the givenment use the 7 day figures in conjunction with testing analysis

Ben has it sussed

Switzerland looks next

Portugal and Greece may not far off either as increasing steadily

Vinoonasunnyday · 24/08/2020 19:54

7 day data has Italy as safer than uk so far

Safest in Europe

Friendsoftheearth · 25/08/2020 09:27

You are not considering testing capacity vin Italy's testing capacity is still much too low, so the infection will be spreading under the radar quickly with little detection (the same thing happened in the spring) particularly among the young.

Italy is definitely better than France and Spain in terms of outbreaks, but for how much longer. I say this as someone with Florence booked in October and hoping we can still go.

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 25/08/2020 10:11

Testing "capacity" is useless as a parameter though isn't it? Just a few weeks ago the UK's "capacity" was announced at 330,000 a day which turned out to be just over 50,000 tests actually carried out.
Adding in the obligatory use of masks in Italy which has been reintroduced due to the local (and mainly imported) increases in cases, plus everyone being extra vigilant becauses schools are going back soon, and I'd hesitantly say, all things being equal , your holiday to Florence will be OK.

SJaneS48 · 25/08/2020 10:12

Two months away @Friendsoftheearth? Surprised by this. On other threads you’ve gone to town on great U.K. summer holidays and the utter selfishness of anyone going abroad. I’m really really surprised you are even considering Italy in October having gone to town on other people not putting ‘the greater good’ ahead of holiday jollies. But perhaps there is one rule for you and one for everybody else?

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 25/08/2020 10:12

Ouch. Grin

BringMeTea · 25/08/2020 10:52
Grin
LEELULUMPKIN · 25/08/2020 12:35

Busted! :)

LEELULUMPKIN · 25/08/2020 12:36

I also wonder if Friendsoftheearth is flying? Not very environmentally friendly.

Friendsoftheearth · 25/08/2020 13:31

Yes we have had Florence booked for a year, it is our anniversary trip! It is our last holiday to cancel (not inc the winter)
So yes of course I would be delighted at the prospect that we will see the virus turn to dust in the next two months and we can go, but I somehow doubt that will be the case....

I don't see how my UK holidays have anything to do with my future trips, but for what it is worth we have had an amazing summer here in the UK - the best summer - mainly because the weather has been beautiful and we have a pool, and we have taken some great trips down to the beautiful cornish coastline - and they were far superior to anything in France and Italy - so yay! Grin

SJaneS48 · 25/08/2020 15:32

Quite honestly Friends, posting v recent comments like the enclosed & then talking about flying off to Italy in 2 months time you are going to raise an eyebrow or two!

We’ve had some lovely holidays in the West Country in UK summertime but if it came down to sitting on a beach in Cornwall with a coat on in August eating a pasty, killing time in the pouring rain at an in door Olden Times ‘museum’ in Devon or swimming in the sea at Villefranche, I know what I’d choose any day of the week.

Holidays abroad - anyone booking?
AnyFucker · 25/08/2020 15:39

@Friendsoftheearth are you Dominic Cummings ? Smile

Bearbehind · 25/08/2020 15:41

@SJaneS48 ‘the greater good’ is clearly making sure riff raff like us stay at home and the numbers drop enough for friendsoftheearth to be able go away when it suits them 😂

Friendsoftheearth · 25/08/2020 16:37

Spain is calling in the army, and you can laugh and snigger as much as you like but it is in pretty poor fucking taste if you ask me given the number of people that have died:

www.theguardian.com/world/2020/aug/25/spain-warned-of-dire-impact-of-second-coronavirus-lockdown

A reality check perhaps

SJaneS48 · 25/08/2020 16:55

Rather than admit a bit of hypocrisy here, assumes a superior moral high ground.

Yes, quite potentially Dominic Cummings @AnyFucker!

(Sorry Friends, I’ll leave you alone now!)

BringMeTea · 25/08/2020 18:24

They've certainly got some brass neck. Grin. Yes, stop laughing you callous summer holiday wanters... I wanna go in October.

SJaneS48 · 25/08/2020 18:44

Sshh @BringMeTea, by mocking Friends it’s one and the same thing as directly taking the piss out of the thousands of people who’ve died, you callous MONSTER you!

(I did say I was going to go away didn’t I? Failure!)

Bearbehind · 25/08/2020 18:48

I think what is in ‘pretty fucking poor taste’ is to use the fact people have died to try and deflect from the complete and utter hypocrisy of your posts friends

Friendsoftheearth · 26/08/2020 09:24

You do know that I haven't actually said I am going bear so do yourself a favour and learn to read the thread properly.

80pc is the number that Italy is now down on tourists this year, for good reason! So any takers that are willing to risk themselves and roll the covid dice is a very good thing for their tanking economy. I happen to love Italy and feel for their predicament, if you are the 20pc good luck to you.
But don't lie to yourself that planes are 'safe', that the growing infection rate is not really happening, and you would be cool with being seriously ill in rural Puglia, because I will call you out on the lies you tell yourself. If you are travelling have the guts to acknowledge you ARE helping to spread the virus, and many more people will die because of it.
