Very tempted to book Turkey for this month. Wondered other people’s thoughts/experiences of travelling abroad?

OP posts:

amieejust · 23/08/2020 23:11

@ScarMatty

Absolutely! Have been on 3 holidays in the past 6 weeks. Battleface provide great insurance.

Definitely not hot and sunny where I live!

3 holidays in the last 6 weeks? Nice bit of stealth boasting there Hmm
ScarMatty · 23/08/2020 23:31

@amieejust

Haha not really!

The question was about booking holidays, of which I have done 3 times in 6 weeks.

I dread to think how much you read between the lines and get the wrong idea Grin

In Italy right now. Absolutely loving it. Feels like the first time I've relaxed in months. Go for it, OP.

Friendsoftheearth · 24/08/2020 08:50

enjoying how do you relax though when Italy's infection rate is rocketing again? That is why I don't truly believe posts like yours, they lack real honesty.
The discussion is all about whether Italy will need a national or local lockdown now, how is any of that fun?! Most could not relax in the backdrop of a second wave - and that is without the worry of my risk factors being increased multiple times in the airports, on the planes etc and the risk it will be added to the no fly list.

I would be more tempted to believe you if you had added the multiple drawbacks as well the benefits.

SJaneS48 · 24/08/2020 09:28

She’s on holiday to be fair @Friendsoftheearth, she very well have switched off from the world and not be looking up local infection rates daily. Very easy to be in a holiday bubble and be completely unaware of what’s happening around you

Friendsoftheearth · 24/08/2020 10:45

Italy are back to the end of April/early May new infection levels, so would anyone have gone to Italy at that time? Of course not.
Everyone that travels must be feeding into news outlets if for no other reason than to ensure that the country is on the bridge list still, and hasn't locked down partially or fully.
I feel some people are burying their heads in the sand and deluding themselves as to how relaxed they actually are/can possibly be. There is not a place on earth that isn't affected by covid, so any bubbles are surely a figment of imagination.

At the end of the day travelling in the middle of a pandemic, taking that risk - being in the epicentre of Europe as we enter the second wave could be called lots of things, but relaxing probably isn't one of them! Grin

Bearbehind · 24/08/2020 10:47

friendsoftheearth you do love a drama don’t you?

Just because you aren’t going away could you please stop sensationalising stories

Unless you have actual evidence that Italy’s cases are ‘rocketing’

I certainly felt very relaxed on holiday.

Maybe realise yourself that not everything thinks the same thoughts as you?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 24/08/2020 10:58

Due to go to Turkey on Saturday and can't bloody wait. This is the 4th rebooking of a holiday originally arranged last summer.

Also plan a break in October if possible, should be Spain but probably not going to happen now.

I haven't seen anywhere about Italy's cases 'rocketing'....?!

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 24/08/2020 11:31

Italy's cases are rising due to two things:

Almost 40% of new cases are refugees who are arriving in Lampedusa (Sicily) on a daily basis.

Most other cases (80%+ of the remaining 60%) are being caught at airports upon reentry from Malta, Croatia and to a lesser extent Greece and Spain. Anyone coming in from those four countries are stopped and tested and must then quarantine for 14 days. And there is none of this "I'll leave a false number" that I've seen on MN. Your documents are photocopied and the authorities are checking you are quarantining at the address you give.

There is (obviously) talk of local lockdowns as and when needed, which is common sense. A small town in Puglia is currently on a localised lockdown due to 60 odd people testing positive following an 18th birthday party, traced back to someone returning from Croatia (this was about three weeks ago now and one of the reasons, taking into account the bigger picture, why Croatia was put on the quarantine list)

Masks, as the other poster will no doubt confirm are obligatory from 6pm to 6am "where social distancing is not possible".

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 24/08/2020 11:33

Here is the 14 day table from the Graphs and Numbers thread:
www.ecdc.europa.eu/en/cases-2019-ncov-eueea

Sweetener12 · 24/08/2020 12:05

Nope, we decided to stay here. Firstly, neither me nor my dh can take hours of sitting in plane with our masks on. Secondly, we've been through a number of troubles while renewing my passport this year (they declined the photo twice before I decided to crop a picture on my own in a special id picture cropper, can you imagine that??). And the last but not the least- is that it just doesn't feel safe. I bet we all will have opportunities to travel but right now the timing isn't that perfect, you see.

Friendsoftheearth · 24/08/2020 12:06

The states are averaged out over a fourteen day period, and that is why it is not helpful to use them. Italy's rates have only just begun to spike so it does not look bad when you look over a fortnight average but the real picture is very different. Take into consideration the lack of testing and it is not a comfortable picture.

Friendsoftheearth · 24/08/2020 12:06

**stats

Friendsoftheearth · 24/08/2020 12:09

you do love a drama don’t you? Nope I like facts and stats.

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 24/08/2020 12:13

The facts are useful. That's why I posted the link to the Europe wide figures.
Are you in Italy Friends?
I'd like to hear more about the lack of testing and the numbers rocketing. If you could link to a scientific data study rather than just a right wing news article it might be useful.

Friendsoftheearth · 24/08/2020 12:14

If you can relax with this happening around you, great but it would be foolish to imagine it is anything but risky, with the risk increasing every day.

FearlessSwiftie · 24/08/2020 12:25

@Sweetener12 wow, I had the same program and had to crop the photo myself, too. It was the baby id for our LO though. What did you use, btw?

FearlessSwiftie · 24/08/2020 12:26

We aren't going anywhere as our family budget can't let us do that this year. Maybe it is for the good though, who knows.

ScarMatty · 24/08/2020 12:26

@Friendsoftheearth

I would class the Daily Mail, Sky News and Telegraph as facts...

notimagain · 24/08/2020 12:36

It's all very well talking about things being risky but nobody's assessment of such is helped when occasionally personal opinions and incorrect information are presented as facts.

It's almost as if it is being done deliberately to exaggerate the level of risk.

BringMeTea · 24/08/2020 12:44

Lol at Daily Mail as deliverer of facts. Grin

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 24/08/2020 12:44

@Sweetener12, my dd's ppt pic was rejected twice! Bloody nightmare!
