Can anyone recommend me a good natural bug spray that works? Going somewhere very bitey with kids & don't want to cover them in deet... 😬😬😬

Tbh DEET works best

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 12/08/2020 19:44

I've been told that Skin So Soft by Avon is good, but I don't know what's in it. It might be spent nuclear fuel. Hmm

NannyR · 12/08/2020 19:51

Mosiguard is good, more natural alternative to deet. Smidge is brilliant against midges, I've never tried it against mosquitoes but it's supposed to be effective. In my experience skin so soft has no effect at all at repelling bugs.
If you are going somewhere where malaria and dengue are a risk I would just use deet and nets/long sleeves.

Letseatgrandma · 12/08/2020 19:54

Pyramid Trek is very good-it used to be called something else, I think, but the bottle looks the same.

Don’t buy the Avon stuff-it smells absolutely foul and really doesn’t work at repelling anything-except your friends, maybe Grin.

WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 12/08/2020 21:19

@Letseatgrandma - but the only friends I've got are mosquitoes Sad

SummerNamechangeHappened · 12/08/2020 21:50

It's not a malarial area. Just hot, outdoorsy & near water so I know there will be mozzies. Thanks for the suggestions. 👍

I swear by Calypso after sun with repellent. It comes in a green bottle and Home Bargains sell it. I cover myself in it. Also Mosqui-go plug ins as they kill mosquitos rather than just repelling them.

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 14/08/2020 14:51

Natural, not a chance.
Superdrug's own black and orange Tim is the deety bollocks though. And stick a Raid Night and Day in your bedroom.
Mozzies don't like geranium leaves but carting a plant pot round with you in this weather is irksome.

EBearhug · 14/08/2020 14:55

I use Mosiguard. My skin comes up in red welts with DEET, so I'm sure it's effective, but...

SummerNamechangeHappened · 15/08/2020 07:19

Ooo plug ins are a good idea. Hiw do they work?

What is Raid night & day???

I was in India under a mosquito net as was my travelling companion, who wore skin so soft by Avon. I wore deet. The next morning I was fine but my companion was badly bitten.

mrsnec · 15/08/2020 07:25

Skin so soft is an urban myth. It only works on some people because it used to have citronella in it.

I haven't found a natural one that works.

drinkingwineoutofamug · 15/08/2020 07:26

Anything 50 deet. Boots do a good range (silver bottles) it comes in a spray, roll on or gel.
I also take garlic capsules 2 weeks before I go away but that may just be coincidence. It's normally an all you can eat buffet . They love my blood Confused

Imtoooldforallthis · 15/08/2020 07:31

Are you going abroad or in this country, if abroud you can get baby cologne which I decant into small spray bottles which is completely safe for babies and also smells gorgeous, in this country you can get Turkish lemon cologne.

ChangingStates · 15/08/2020 07:34

I've found Smidge to be very effective. Second the pp who suggested mosi -repellent plug ins for rooms. Also those little electric shock/charge click things (sorry no idea of the name) are great at stopping the itching if you get bitten.

This, they actually work.

SJaneS48 · 18/08/2020 13:55

Plug ins definitely - they do work. I usually buy mosquito repellant coils for balconies - they don’t 100% work but help!

Have to agree re rubbishness of the natural stuff but Mosieguard is ok - usually use it in the evenings and it’s not bad. The Avon stuff just doesn’t work at all.
