Portugal, Algarve- anyone going in August?

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 02/08/2020 12:04

Is anyone going to the Algarve despite it not being on the 'travel corridor' list?

The figures look ok they had 200 new cases as a country yesterday, the UK had 800 new cases the same day.
What do you think????

Given that your insurance won't be valid I think you'd be mad.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 02/08/2020 15:56

would that just be covid related or everything titchy

SeasonFinale · 02/08/2020 16:03

It won't be valid for anything

titchy · 02/08/2020 16:32

No travel insurance will be valid for travel against FCO guidance. So medical, cancellation, theft. No claims possible.

I live in the Algarve and our numbers have been very low, I’m not sure why we aren’t included in the airbridge, but until we are I wouldn’t travel. We have the opposite problem in that my mother in law died last week and my husband can’t travel for the funeral as things stand

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 02/08/2020 16:48

Costacoffeeplease thats very sad for your husband, I hope he can arrange to go somehow.
Can I ask why you wouldn't travel?

We usually go each year to the Algarve and really enjoy it. We are low key and just stay in our villa or on the beaches generally.

Umm because he'd gave to quarantine for 2 weeks when he landed in the uk. Confused

Campervan69 · 02/08/2020 17:18

We've got a holiday booked 20th August. We were planning on going as it hasn't been cancelled yet so we'd lose all our money.

shinynewapple2020 · 02/08/2020 18:33

We have Portugal booked in September . Waiting to see what happens but given the new restrictions being bought in for specific UK areas and considered for others I have a feeling that repealing the quarantine isn't going to happen now.

DH is 'researching' alternative destinations. I think he's mad and would rather stay in UK.

usernotfound0000 · 02/08/2020 22:18

We got back last week. We stayed in a villa and mostly self catered, although we did have a few meals out. It was wonderful. We're currently quarantined now, so obviously only go if you're able/prepared to do that. There is some companies that will offer insurance if you look around. Our existing insurance offered us medical cover so we felt that was enough based on our financial situation, but obviously that is a personal choice to make.

Costacoffeeplease · 03/08/2020 00:14

I wouldn’t travel unless I was able to get full insurance, and the risk of passing through airports, spending several hours on a plane etc. I wouldn’t want to possibly be responsible for causing our numbers to increase.

We already have lots of Spanish, french, northern Portuguese tourists, I think that’s enough risk for now

Costacoffeeplease · 03/08/2020 00:21

The beaches are policed and only certain numbers are allowed at a time. Restaurants and cafes have to close to new customers at 11pm but can stay open another hour or so. Bars are opening up but not nightclubs, you can’t drink alcohol outside unless you’re sitting at a table on the terrace of a bar/restaurant. So there are lots of rules to get used to and of course masks are worn in enclosed public spaces

Campervan69 · 13/08/2020 22:42

Portugal are offering their own insurance to tempt people over.

@usernotfound0000 can I ask how you coped with quarantine? I am working from home anyway so thinking it is doable.

usernotfound0000 · 14/08/2020 07:19

@Campervan69 it wasn't too bad. Make sure you have food deliveries of people who can drop it off for you. We were working at home with 2 kids, we used screen time a lot but it was totally worth it.

usernotfound0000 · 14/08/2020 07:19

Or people that should say!

Campervan69 · 14/08/2020 09:29

We have grandparents local who have said they will deliver shopping. Are you allowed to get a Tesco delivery?

Did they check up on you? We're both home working and kids spend all day on their computers anyway so can't see it being an issue. Have a big garden as well.

usernotfound0000 · 14/08/2020 10:02

I didn't see anything in the rules about not getting deliveries, we had weekly deliveries, I just asked the driver to leave it on the step and we moved it inside once he'd gone. We didn't get checked on, we travelled with 2 other families and they didn't get checked on either. We did get asked in the airport on arrival to show that we had done the online form, and they were making people who hadn't do it before they could go through passport control.
Kids had a bit of cabin fever on the last few days but luckily the weather was nice so they were playing in the garden.

Campervan69 · 14/08/2020 15:30

Does each adult have to do a separate form or can one family all be on one? My eldest son is 18 and was wondering if he would need to do a separate one. Just looked online but you can't do it until 2 days before you come home.

usernotfound0000 · 14/08/2020 15:59

Each adult needs a separate form, there is the option to add children on to an adults form.

We went to the Algarve in July and sucked up the quarantine upon return. It was so worth it, had a lovely time. You have to wear masks in shops and when walking around in restaurants but not while seated. Other than that all very normal, if a bit quieter than usual. This worked very much in our favour at the water park with minimal queues!

We were able to get insurance for medical costs and baggage but excluding flight cancellation.

tinkerbellvspredator · 14/08/2020 16:25

We had flight bookings which have now been cancelled by BA anyway.

Campervan69 · 20/08/2020 23:18

Well that worked out well Smile

Have had a lovely safe time here. Going home Monday and won't need to quarantine. So happy.
