Anyone else now going to France?

Just wanting a quick poll on what people's thoughts are about going to France with current lockdown relaxations? - Euro tunnel, caravan 2 x hotel stop offs en route with 2 DC's .....All facilities on sites open apparently but gel, masks etc needed. Wondering will it be empty? Hard work and weird to follow rules? What would you do? x

I am currently 1 week into quarantining from Gran Canaria- so far no phone calls or checks. I only gave my mobile and besides, I don't normally answer my home phone anyway as it's always sales so that wouldn't be a good check anyway!

fartyface · 13/08/2020 22:59

You are gonna need to charge your phone @holding!

FinallyRelief · 13/08/2020 23:02

@saltycat

If you don't want to spread this bastarding virus stay home.

If you absolutely NEED to get to France ask yourselves why you do and is it absolutely necessary.

France is fkd for the moment and I wouldn't set foot in it anytime soon, same for Spain and Greek cases are also rising by the noon day too.

This thing is not going anywhere, but for now if people just stayed at home, wash their hands and wear a mask, things could ease for now.

I await the backlash, but it is a personal thing just the same I know that.

Dunno two weeks tomorrow we got back from France and 🙏🏽 all fine so far.

Plus no one has called us - and yes our form was checked but not printed out I just had it on my phone and showed it to border control.

Go to Brighton or wherever and order your cheese and wine to be delivered there from France! What could possibly go wrong? LOL

Not demeaning anyone, but it is all so complicated and a tad dangerous to you and your family now to travel for holidays abroad.

Hopefully it is only this year, I think most could cope. And if they can't well what can I say really.

Felt safer in France with masks etc no one flouted the rules. Here I've seen people take off their masks to talk to staff in shops?!
Parker231 · 13/08/2020 23:04

@saltycat - I’ll be safer in Dordogne than on the beach in Brighton.

bestbefore · 13/08/2020 23:05

@MinnieMousse similar for us; did you complete it online or paper version?

Thunderpunt · 13/08/2020 23:07

@Limeavocado

Surely anyone just travelling through France - even staying in their vehicle all the time - will be mixing with people travelling from France on the ferry in fairly close quarters (loos, cafe etc) and therefore are just as likely to pick up an infection (if there is indeed a high risk) as if they'd stopped off in France?
Not if traveling with eurotunnel - not allowed out of your car at all

Oh sorry, there will always be those who think flouting the rules are fine for them and X place is safer in France than Y place in UK.

I'm staying home this year and waiting to see what happens.

Look, I understand the desire to get away totally, but times are a bit different now.

loveisagirlnameddaisy · 13/08/2020 23:18

We are due to travel first thing tomorrow morning so this is really helpful. No one open to speak to about cancelling anything. Not sure what the FCO thinks we're supposed to do with a fucking announcement at this time at night.

1stMrsF · 13/08/2020 23:20

@MinnieMousse

I'm assuming they may be a bit more vigilant now they've introduced quarantine, but I dutifully filled in the passenger locator form when I returned from France 2 weeks ago and nobody checked at all when we arrived at Dover (on the ferry). They had signs up that they would be checking everyone's form but no cars at all were pulled over. In fact it's the quickest I've ever got out of Dover.
I completely forgot to fill in the form at all and not asked for it when passports checked by UK Border Force on Calais side. Had a total panic when we arrived at Dover and saw the sign saying checks ahead, but didn't get stopped!

A friend is all packed to leave tomorrow. Can't imagine having to tell the kids when they wake up that the holiday is off Sad

So disappointed. Meant to be leaving tomorrow morning and the kids will be so sad. Suitcases all packed ready.

Desperate to get away but where to go? Everywhere is booked up and frankly we would have been far safer in remote France than if we end up going elsewhere in the UK.

No one here is advocating flouting the rules. Everyone who's still planning to travel is prepared to complete the 14 day quarantine. There has not been a single post which says otherwise. You stay home if you want, but no one's breaking any 'rules' just by making a different decision from yours. And it is factually true that some places in France will be safer than some places in the UK.
loveisagirlnameddaisy · 13/08/2020 23:27

@Fink

I'm off to get the high risk travel insurance then. Bye bye to my £30 annual cover.
Are you driving? We're agonising over whether to go but we think our car insurance wouldn't even be valid abroad anymore
pandafunfactory · 13/08/2020 23:33

@BringBackDoves you could try London hotels? A couple of nights away at least?
See if any friends want to house swap?
Daytrips and meals out?

mangocoveredlamb · 13/08/2020 23:33

We’re in France at the moment and due back on Tuesday. We were prepared for this and planned to be back 14 days before anyone needs to be anywhere. Bit gutted as 14 days with the kids at home doesn’t seem fun but it’s better than lockdown! (We’re 12 hours non stop
Drive from Calais and any euro tunnel is booked from 11am tomorrow so scant chance of getting home pre deadline even if we wanted to!)

I’m trying all options. I will have to look again in the morning. Just feel too deflated now and dreading telling the kids!

pandafunfactory · 13/08/2020 23:44

@BringBackDoves I just checked premier inns, various Leeds ones have availability over the weekend and it's a decent base for trips in to the Dales. And there is availability in York, the Marriott looks to have rooms and the holiday inn.

pandafunfactory · 13/08/2020 23:48

I don't know where you are of course. Hope it isn't Tadcaster or Selby 😀
There look to be apartments and flats as well and York is in easy reach of some lovely beaches on the East coast.

bakingbernie · 13/08/2020 23:48

At the end of the day it appears that
Travel Insurance
Car Insurance
Breakdown Cover
Will all be invalid if you travel against FCO advice. The FCO website has been updated. Surely that is that? No travel?

pandafunfactory · 13/08/2020 23:53

And if people fancy the gamble there's always Italy...they see to be doing ok

Thank you - it’s very kind of you to look. Luckily we aren’t in Tadcaster or Selby! I do love York so that’s a good option.
