Planning car trip from UK to Switzerland - anyone can advise?
iragluz · 18/07/2020 12:39
Hello! Has anyone had or planning a car trip to Europe during Covid? We want to go from London, take the ferry to Calais and go to Switzerland for about 10 days. Any advice from someone who drove to Europe during Covid will be appreciated.

To drive to Switzerland I think you need a vignette but I think you can buy it when you reach the border. Check your car insurance and breakdown cover include the countries you will be driving through. You also need hi viz jackets, breathalysers and a red triangle. Headlights need to be adjusted or the stickers and you need a gb sticker. Remember EHIC and travel insurance. Re covid we will be taking masks, hand sanitiser etc and following whatever rules are in place. We have booked Accor en route hotels which can be cancelled up to 3 days before. Not going to Switzerland so not sure of exact rules there.

Do you absolutely have to drive there particularly this year?. Is flying there not an option?.
As far as I am aware Switzerland has no restrictions currently on UK citizens visiting. Face coverings though are mandatory on public transport.

Flying is an option, but a bad one, as we don't want to catch the Covid in the airplane, that's why we are driving.

I only know people who are driving this year - no-one wants to fly!
We have driven to Switzerland many times previously, and you need everything mentioned by chocolat above. Yes, you can buy the vignette at the border, and the journey is really easy. Depending on where you are going, it can be easier and quicker to cross into Germany and drive down that way. If we do that we stay somewhere around Strasbourg, if going in via southern France somewhere like Bourg. Lots of Novotel type hotels on that route.
Do not speed in Switzerland, the fine is big, and they carry guns!
