Where to stay, etc, in Kruger?

We're planning a trip to South Africa with a 4-year-old and an 8 mos old and want to spend a few days in Kruger. Any recommendations on where to stay? Did anyone do self-drive game drives there, and how did that work out? Don't want to inflict active 4-year-old on a minibus full of animal-loving tourists.

I would check with your doctor first about taking you kids into a malaria area - if you want to go on safari in SA with samml kids, then there are a number of malaria-free parks in the eastern cape, but I would check first.

also, if your 4-yr old is really active, Iwould suggest using a closed -topped car. Not to put too finer point on it, but the safari vehicles are all open-topped and children have to be able to sit dead still and dead quiet when you are out on a game drive and close to the animals.

We live in Ghana so the boy's already on Larium, no worries on malaria. The baby will be kept indoors and/or under a treated net from dusk to dawn.

Expect we'd be doing self-drive game drives in a rented SUV. Hadn't thought about the open-top vehicles. Good tip.
