I've had the airbag disabled in 2 cars that I've owned. The VW Golf I have now was easy - VW dealer did it for me FOC when I bought it. But when I had my Renault Clio, I had to get a letter from my insurance to say they were aware that I was to have the passenger air bag disabled, I then had to sign a disclaimer at the renault dealer - they then disabled it for me - it cost about £50 5 years ago. Go ask your local renault dealer, they will do it.
I bought a Ford Focus once and Ford refused to switch it off at all - so I sold it.

Alfa Romeo's can be switched on and off using the car key

I've had the passenger airbag on my S reg Golf disabled and the garage did it for free, but I think it would take about an hour so whatever their hourly rate is. Newer cars sometimes have a switch which makes life easier!

My DH used to have a renault megane and there was a switch.

It was on the side of the dashboard, the bit that the passenger door shuts against.

I don't know if this is standard for all renaults though
