If quarantine is lifted, would you still go abroad this summer? Why?

We are in two minds. We still haven't changed or cancelled our holiday to Spain. The quarantine would be impossible for us but if it is lifted, we are thinking we may go but so much to think about.

Wondered what others are thinking

We cancelled Borneo / Thailand holiday and will take next summer instead if there's a vaccine / solution. Going to Devon instead this year and will stay in a castle (DS chose it) with beautiful 50 acre gardens, go on boat trips to see dolphins, seals, puffins etc and llama walking in Dartmoor.

I didn't want to take risk of being quarantined abroad, refused flights, long flights with masks and ASD child, insurance coverage issues, worried if we could covid could spread it to people who can't afford healthcare. Now UK citizens are banned from Malaysia / Borneo anyway until 31st August which is 3/4s of holiday. If I alter to just Thailand insurance doesn't cover though also gets out of paying out mostly. Our flights out to Thailand got cancelled and refunded in full.

I wondered about Europe if you can get insurance / healthcare cover but decided too risky. DH will only go in car not on a plane atm. I don't want to spend hours stuck in our car so that ruled out most places abroad would want to go to.

Can you get a refund / change of dates? Is insurance covering you in full?

carrottopper · 30/06/2020 05:15

Yes we can change our holiday or get a refund. At the moment, I can't see a greater risk going abroad to being at home. I think our insurance covers us but need to look into this more

I hadn't and won't be booking anything.
It (COVID-19) is just dormant. It's alive and kicking. We have winter in a few months and no vaccine. The stats have gone down and up and down. It's lurking.

Ofitck · 30/06/2020 05:25

I live abroad and am coming to the UK today. I have my ehic card with me.

I'd definitely go to Spain or another mainland Europe place. I am driving to the uk because I'd wouldn't want to risk plane cancellations. Where I am they are taking distancing seriously and it feels very safe. I'm nervous about coming to the uk but I only have the newspaper reports to go on - maybe it will feel safer when I'm there.

The biggest risk of going abroad is you spreading Covid-19 to others not you picking it up. The UK is generally considered a high risk country internationally. I live in a very low risk country and I will travel if I can find a way that I can be certain I will be allowed back home.
BackInTime · 30/06/2020 08:34

We have cancelled our plans, too much uncertainty and a situation that can change overnight and the risk of being stuck in quarantine/ lockdown in a foreign country. Just not my idea of holidays.

MsTSwift · 30/06/2020 08:40

We are going but by car not train and were self catering anyway

googledontknow · 30/06/2020 09:16

Nope.
I travelled abroad a lot in 2019, (including 3 longhawl holidays).
I'm going to stay home this year and plant some trees!
It's going to be too expensive to holiday in the UK and too crowded, I'm happy to have a year off the travel and sort out my house/garden instead.
I would love to go camping in sept, but I doubt I'll be sharp-elbowed enough to bother trying to find/book a place.

Zodlebud · 30/06/2020 09:28

The thought of wearing a face mask for the entire plane journey is enough to put me off!!

astuz · 30/06/2020 09:39

I'm desperate for a holiday in the summer holidays, even just for a week to break up those 6 weeks.

We've looked at various things eg. a typical package holiday to somewhere like Majorca, or driving into Europe to Belgium/France/Germany(if there's an airbridge) - somewhere not too far away. The thing that's putting me off somewhere like Majorca, is being reliant on a flight to get home. What happens if they have a sudden spike in cases, and cancel all flights out? At least if we're in our own car, it's easier to get back home (I think?!).

We could stay in the UK, but nothing's grabbing me really and deep down, I want to go somewhere completely different, where I've never been before. I might as well stay home and do day trips or the odd overnight stay, if we stay in the UK.

The other problem is insurance - we bought annual travel insurance, but they're refusing to cover any new bookings, so we'd have to buy yet more travel insurance, just for this trip, which bugs me, even though it shouldn't be a huge amount of money.

chantico · 30/06/2020 09:53

No, because it would currently be uninsurable for Covid issues. That's not just cancellation, it's also that I can't afford to pay for a stay in an ICU abroad. Nor would I want to pay for quarantine (either if imposed on travellers, or if in contact with a case such that it was required whilst away)

I'm planning to remain in UK and to go and stay with a family member who lives in a tourist area, providing it still looks safe and suitable so to do.

(I'll also be looking to 'Buy British' as much as possible for everything)

chocolatviennois · 30/06/2020 09:56

I would not go on a holiday that involved a flight. Fortunately the European holiday we booked last year is self drive with a ferry crossing that will include a private cabin.

I feel relaxed about going and am really looking forward to it.
We will do all we can to minimise the risk of catching corona. Eg. we will avoid stopping at motorway service stations at lunch time when they are busy. I will fling open the window and do a quick detox of hard services on arrival at en route hotels. We will do outdoor activities. At the hotel we will eat all meals outside or in our room.

astuz · 30/06/2020 10:29

@chantico I saw some insurance where they were covering for any medical treatment as a result of COVID, but not anything else (so no cancellation, no money for hotels if get quarantined etc) - I reckon I can cover all the non-insured bits, it's just if one of us ended up in hospital that I'd want to make sure we were covered, because that would cost a fortune.

AnnaNimmity · 30/06/2020 10:33

Yes I have a sailing holiday booked at the end of August in Greece and will go if I can. I'll be on a boat with my children and no one else and will risk the flight. I do need to check my insurance.

I have much more faith in other countries than i do in this one - it's only the flight I feel a bit concerned about. Unsurprisingly Greece is rather concerned about letting Brits in.

Apolloanddaphne · 30/06/2020 10:34

Absolutely not. I don't think it is worth the risk. Have you seen the planned guidance for travel ( I saw it but cannot remember where)? I don't think I would enjoy wearing a mask for an entire flight and social distanced queuing in already busy airports will be a bit of I nightmare I think. I can wait.

Defenestratethecat · 30/06/2020 10:45

If holiday is at an hotel it probably wouldn't be much fun - there's been some footage on the news of how hotels in Spain/Italy are proposing to socially distance, provide meals and cope with pool hygiene Nd it all looks very stilted.

Hyperion100 · 30/06/2020 10:53

Nope...UK breaks only for us.

Which could well be a boon for brexit Britain as the native tourism industry will need every penny it can get.

SoooExtra · 30/06/2020 11:00

Assuming we are permitted we are going to Italy for four weeks beginning in mid July. We are staying one week in an Airbnb and three weeks staying with family.

For us the risk of getting or spreading covid by doing this is no higher than it would be if we drove to Cornwall— possibly even lower. My mother is 75 years old and in fantastic physical shape. My father was the same and he died quite suddenly last year, so I think we are all of the mindset that we need to live life to the fullest, right now, because who knows if there will be a tmw. Within reason of course. My mum is fully aware of the risks and has told me time and again that she would rather have the time with us this summer than spend another year or more in lockdown or worse. She and my father had been planning a once in a lifetime holiday this year but she desperately wishes they’d done it sooner.

We followed the lockdown carefully to protect the NHS but that has loosened, and we are all comfortable with the risk/reward balance we are striking. We’re not idiots and obvsly we will do all we can to protect others and ourselves — masks, sanitising, social distancing, and staying home as much as possible. Our Airbnb has a private pool and my mum lives on a beautiful property walking distance to a deserted beach. (Obviously if it turns out to be crowded we’d not go.) We will assess day by day. All of us have to learn to live with the virus and make our own choices with the information available. If Dominic Cummings has taught me one thing it’s that we can all decide individually what is best for our families.

I respect that many people do not feel the level of risk is acceptable, be it because of getting ill, paying for treatment, catching C19 during travel or being locked down in a foreign country. We are aware of those risks and can manage those that can be managed. If god forbid the worst happens I will still be OK with our decision.

timeforawine · 30/06/2020 11:03

Yep because we want to. We're happy to wear masks as needed and happy with the plans the hotel has in place. Looking forward to a week of cooking/cleaning etc.

anothernewone · 30/06/2020 11:28

We have a uk break booked plus france. Will be doing both. We are driving to france and self contained and self catering there with lots of outdoor activities so don't really see any additional risk to being at home
I will just be glad for a break from the monotony of the new norm.

Parker231 · 30/06/2020 11:30

We are going to visit my family in Belgium and on holiday to Dordogne.

HathorX · 30/06/2020 14:30

Definitely wouldn't fly anywhere, not cos of virus per se, more about experiencing long queues at airports and people being inconsiderate of small kids.

We will have a weekend away in the UK and do day trips, saving our money so that when we do go on holiday we won't have any anxiety or compromises (hopefully!).

We would be disappointed to get somewhere and find we weren't welcome or had to wear masks or tourist things were shut.

chocolatviennois · 30/06/2020 16:13

I hate crowds so am thinking my holiday might be more enjoyable this year. Brittany Ferries are cutting passenger numbers to 50% and the hotel we are going to is also reducing numbers, extending meal times etc. Extra cleaning procedures are in place everywhere. Whereas the cost of our holiday will stay the same.

This will not be sustainable for the travel industry so by next year I imagine either prices will rise substantially or ferries and hotels will be nearer to capacity. Therefore I do not see any benefit in postponing my holiday till next year...particularly given that the virus will probably still be around.

cptartapp · 30/06/2020 16:25

If the FCO change their current advice we will go to Halkidiki in August.
I have been working in ppe throughout all this and have tested positive for the antibodies. Likely at least one other family member has had it too. All fit and well. DS1 will probably not want to come with us next year due to age so don't want to postpone. Their exam years are screwed. We all need a break.
RIsk v benefit for us, we'd go.

BG2015 · 30/06/2020 21:43

We have a holiday booked to Lanzarote at the end of August. If we can go we will. Only two of us.Fit and healthy. We think DP had it in March but it was before the testing ramped up so we will never know - not sure if I have had it.

I can cope wearing a mask on the flight. The airport are doing staggered security check in times which we have booked. I've read the safety measures in place for our apartments which are very comprehensive.

We keep ourselves to ourselves on holiday anyway and quite happy to lie on a socially distanced sunbed. Booked annual travel insurance before all this started so we are covered.

Already had one holiday cancelled and postponed another to next year.
