If quarantine is lifted, would you still go abroad this summer? Why?

We are in two minds. We still haven't changed or cancelled our holiday to Spain. The quarantine would be impossible for us but if it is lifted, we are thinking we may go but so much to think about.

Wondered what others are thinking

We were meant to go to Portugal, but looking very unlikely now. We will instead go to the nearest coast and stay in DFs caravan. We won't use any onsite facilities apart from the park if it is quiet enough. We will only visit quiet beaches. Our time will be spent walking, biking and on the beach so will socially distance as much as possible.

daisymay133 · 06/07/2020 20:46

Of course uk has highest in Europe we have the biggest population in one of the smallest areas geographically

I’m surprised it’s not more! Our population is bigger than Italy france etc so it makes sense

Beachcomber1 · 06/07/2020 21:19

Some very selfish responses here.

I’m not from the UK but often holiday there and had planned to this year, but I won’t. I think it’s irresponsible to risk bringing more cases to other countries.
I normally go to Cornwall- but it’s a remote area with one hospital and I don’t want to overburden it even more, in the event that I got sick.

The way the UK has handled the pandemic has been very poor, and UK residents pose a significant threat to the safety of other countries.

daisymay133 · 06/07/2020 21:39

I don’t get your point

We lockedown at almost exact same point as the infection curve of all other countries - they just peaked earlier

Lockdown frustration proved that any earlier would have back fired as people got bored very quickly

Our schools still shut for most whereas many in Europe never closed

We pay furlough at a rate vastly higher than other countries

Our infection is higher but so is our population so that makes sense!

There’s nothing to say in terms of comparisons

Many eu countries haven’t even inc care homes in their death count

tilder · 06/07/2020 22:04

No.

The lifting of restrictions without quarantine is financially motivated. Totally get that people need to earn money. I will spend my money locally.

On insurance. Please make sure you have enough. Main issue seems to be if you are refused boarding on the plane/ferry/etc. What happens then?

daisymay133 · 06/07/2020 22:06

Other countries lifted at exactly the same stage if not higher!

And yes unless we lockdown til there’s a vaccine why wouldn’t we u lock?

352 people got infection today - many prob asymptomatic key workers - out of 66 million!!!!

Absolute bonkers that we are in any kind of lockdown at all

sofato5miles · 07/07/2020 05:37

@daisymay133 what do you believe to be the differences in populations?

MsTSwift · 07/07/2020 07:17

The numbers are tiny now both in our area and where we are going. We are driving and staying in our bubble. Looking at the risk involved not going makes no rational sense.

Chat with neighbours other day vast majority are going in the holidays they had originally planned.

sansou · 07/07/2020 10:43

Email received today stating that our outbound flights to Slovenia at the end of the month is now cancelled so we’ll be joining the lengthy queue awaiting a refund.

For us, cancelling our accommodation reservations last month was the right call. We’re totally the type of holiday maker who would choose to book S/C rentals in the areas of Spain experiencing localised lockdowns.

londonscalling · 07/07/2020 15:20

Definitely not. I definitely don't want to get on a plane. Coronavirus is still around but has just lulled because most of us have been isolating.

Things won't be the same abroad anyway. In some countries there is still lots of social distancing, some restaurants and bars are closed. Beaches and pools are limiting the amount of people.

Also, I don't want to get ill in a foreign country. I've done that before and it's not good!

carrottopper · 07/07/2020 17:32

@londonscalling is that a choice you will make until there is a vaccine? Just wondering when those who say they wouldn't go would feel it was ok to go abroad

I think July and August are probably the best times to go away. Planes aren't full, resorts aren't as crowded and watching YouTube videos of some resorts, there is the same social distancing and mask wearing as here.

I've heard people say you HAVE to wear a mask at all times in Spain (you don't), you have to have an appointment to go on the beach (you don't), lots of false rumours being spread by people who don't know the facts.

We have friends who live in Spain and they say places are beginning to open up, and lots of sensible measures in place.

I totally respect the people who don't want to travel yet, but I can make a choice based on my own circumstances and we've decided to go.

Anotherdayanothernight · 07/07/2020 19:18

Yes, we have flights to Sicily and presuming the flights will still go ahead we will go, staying in a hotel with a lot of precautions/measures set up and the rate of infections there is a lot lower than UK. I have heard from a few people there that everything is more or less open, with distancing, and life is fairly normal

Foxinsocks1 · 07/07/2020 20:33

We have a trip to Portugal booked and if we’re allowed we’ll still go. I don’t feel comfortable going out in the UK so wouldn’t want to holiday here, people aren’t wearing masks or respecting distance. We have a private villa booked with miles of nearby beaches so we know we can easily distance there. The restaurants are all open air and have implemented measures to ensure distancing. We just want 2 weeks in the sun where the children can feel free as my youngest has really suffered.
I understand some believe travelling is selfish, maybe it is but Portugal want tourists for their economy.

KoalasandRabbit · 08/07/2020 15:13

We are not going abroad this year, next year we are hoping will be a vaccine available widely pre summer or a solution found. If its still an issue I wouldn't go to Asia as not easy to get back down, risk of passing it on to those without access to free healthcare from flight, flights could refuse boarding, kids (one ASD) don't want to holiday in masks, risk of local lockdowns, insurance cover is patchy, bankruptcy risks. We were assured by insurance when we bought it would pay out for FCO advice changing but in fine print they get out of paying for almost everything and added another clause saying you have to accept any credit voucher offer. We accepted some and they are now going bankrupt and insurance won't pay out.

But there maybe something we would consider booked at last minute, remote, with free healthcare, not too far away we could do next year abroad. Not sure what at this stage just watching and waiting.

minipie · 08/07/2020 15:20

We’re going to France at the weekend. Driving, so no public transport involved, and staying in s/c in the middle of nowhere. We’ll need to buy food but will keep shopping trips to a minimum, and use outdoor markets rather than supermarkets where possible. Otherwise we have no need to see a soul.

We are also booked to go to Greece in August. That’s a rather different proposition given it involves a flight, but is also self catering in a self contained house. If cases both here and there remain low we will go. Selfish perhaps but if we don’t go we lose thousands of pounds.

cptartapp · 08/07/2020 15:26

The FCO advice for Greece is currently screening all U.K. passengers on arrival at the airport. If you test positive you have to quarantine for 14 days in government provided accomodation, or if anyone on your flight tests positive this is also likely to apply!!
For this reason we're deferring Greece until next year. Not worth the risk IMO.

DisobedientHamster · 08/07/2020 15:30

I already have. I have family abroad.

namechange34 · 08/07/2020 16:14

I thought france hadnt lifted the 14 day self isolation for travellers from the UK yet?

minipie · 08/07/2020 17:23

It lifts from 10 July namechange

londonscalling · 08/07/2020 18:21
@londonscalling is that a choice you will make until there is a vaccine? Just wondering when those who say they wouldn't go would feel it was ok to go abroad
It's a choice I've made until we see if there is a second wave. I'll then feel I can make a slightly more informed decision.

namechange34 · 08/07/2020 18:38

@minipie do you have a link please? Very interested as we need to visit family. I know that the uk lifted quarantine for entering but I haven't seen france lifting the quarantine for arrivals from the uk? I know it's not strictly policed though, just worried about having to travel across the country and possibly having to stay overnight en route to family.

minipie · 08/07/2020 18:49

I can’t find anything on a govt website at the moment but here is an article that says that.

minipie · 08/07/2020 18:51

Same in the Telegraph link

minipie · 08/07/2020 18:55

Not to imply the Telegraph is any kind of authority Grin it was just the first well known paper I found. Same is reported by all the papers and the BBC.
