Riu hotel Mexico

After thinking of going to Bali or Vietnam for our honeymoon we have now decided to be lazy and go all inclusive to Mexico 😂
Has anyone been and stayed at a Riu hotel? We are considering the Tequila.
Thanks for your help

I haven't been in that Riu but at Riu Palace Tenerife and loved it.

Playa del Carmen is lovely, go for it!
DS1 was "fabricated" in playa del carmen many years ago so very fond memories..... Stay in Playa del Carmen or further South towards Tulum but not north in what is called Riviera Maya. Terrible sea vegetation. It is like swimming in a forest. Totally unpleasant. The water in Playa del Carmen is really nice and there are great bars on the beach in which to have a drink or dance at night.

Stayed at that very hotel albeit about 15 years ago. Was beautiful. I’m pretty sure they’ve had a refurb in the last year or two so I’d imagine it would be even better. Mexico is a brilliant holiday destination. They are very welcoming friendly people. Plenty of places to just relax but also many fun adventure places to go and some beautiful places of interest to see. We’ve been back since but stayed elsewhere just because we found another hotel with a bit more for children. Wouldn’t hesitate to go back to Mexico and stay at the Riu Tequila again.

Riu Cancun was amazing.....avoid Spring Break though, unless you're younger than this middle aged fuddy duddy Grin

We’ve been to RIU Vallarta (Pacific Coast of Mexico)....best hotel we have ever been to. Food, staff, location and amenities fantastic.

Thanks for all the replies, just booked the Tequila :)
Can't wait now I think it will really suit us.

If anyone can recommend any trips I would really appreciate it.

We went to the Tequila 2 years ago. Loved it! It's not directly on the beach but there is a shuttle and it's not far to walk. You can also access the other rius opposite - sorry can't remember their names.
If you turn left out of the hotel there is a little parade of shops and we booked our trips there. The highlight was Chichen Itza. It was a long day but totally amazing and worth it. Playa del Carmen is about 40 mins walk away and worth a visit. We also did an adrenaline day (caves, quad bike, zip line etc).

Cantdecidewhich · 08/06/2020 07:53

Sounds perfect! We won't mind a walk to the beach we like to get a bit of exercise Smile
@MrsPatrickDempsey what was the entertainment like?

We aren't massively into hotel entertainment but remember in the evening a fab guitar group. My kids loved the foam party in the day.
Sorry not that helpful but I remember the jet lag wiping me out and needing some early nights 😂

Cantdecidewhich · 09/06/2020 12:02

@MrsPatrickDempsey yes we will probably need some early nights after the run up to our wedding and the travelling Grin

We loved the Tequila and were also there 2 years ago. Swimming with the whale sharks and Chichen Itza were highlights.
You can book at the shops, we used a stall outside Starbucks- be prepared to haggle, we got big discounts for booking a couple of trips.
Things we didn't do but regretted included a day trip to Cozumel, a visit to Holguin and having the optics removed from the teens bedrooms (but they still declare it the best holiday ever!).

ScorpionQueen · 11/06/2020 22:42

The ruins at Tulum and the beach at Akumel sorry, Holguin is Cuba, where I'm not going this year because of Covid.

Cantdecidewhich · 12/06/2020 07:43

@ScorpionQueen had to laugh about the optics 😂
We have said we definitely want to go to Cozumel, not so sure about Tulum.

You'll absolutely love it, it's amazing. Highlight of ours was Xcaret park. When are you going? We're booked in for next June now, I can't wait 😂

There are 5 Riu hotels in Playa and the Tequila is the worst one if the 5! It’s not on the beach, it’s a good 10 minutes walk to get into it. They returbed it 3 ish years ago and it now has 4 rectangular, soulless pools with no shade and all the sun begs rammed together in rows.
The Yucutan is better value for money, significantly better pool and is directly on the beach.
The place hotels are the best, particularly the Palace Riveria Maya. Also in the beach and both true 5 star hotels.

Tequila says 5 star but it’s a club hotel so is 3.5 star at best. Yucutan is more 4 star as is the Playacar. Place hotels are 5 stars

It’s not a Riu but we had part of our honeymoon (after 4 days in Mexico City for the cultural bit) in the Grand Occidental in Cozumel. Cozumel is an island off the Riviera Maya, it gets far less tourists than Cancun or the Riviera Maya so is less built up. The Occidental is AI and is built in a Moorish style. The beach is beautiful and there are lots of good diving/snorkelling possibilities. Very nice place to just lie by a pool sipping a cocktail with flamingos flying overhead and iguana’s wandering around. We hired a jeep and explored the island including the old temple complex (it used to be a key Mayan site) that gets far less visitors than Tulum. It’s connected by a ferry to the mainland with v regular departures so day trips to Tulum etc are easy. Would definitely recommend as a honeymoon destination!

We're booked for the Tequila in November. They've got a Facebook fan page. It's really well thought of
Can't wait to go and fingers crossed Tui are flying there by then
