Sun holidays abroad in August - do your children melt?

Gobbledigook · 13/09/2007 20:59

We have only done a couple of holidays abroad since we had the boys and we've always gone in May for 'nice but bearable' weather. Since this has largely backfired and we've ended up with rain, we are looking to go in August next year.

Is it not absolutely unbearably roasting though??

Oh Lanzarote I'm on about. Doh.

I spent the last week in August in Egypt with dd who is 5 and very fair

I made her wear a SPF 50 tshirt but she was fine.. just make sure you go somewhere with air con so you can get of the heat when you want to

NappiesGalore · 13/09/2007 22:50

yep.

took 1 and 2yos to mallorca in august a coupla years back.
we managed, but was too hot for them really.
had to smother them in P20 the second they got up and let them out 20 mins after that... but there was a great whack of each (middle of) day where hey couldnt be outside as was too hot.

was a bit of a pita tbh.

Think it probably depends on your children. We have taken dd a few times (she's 2.7) and the hottest was in greece in august this year (high 30s) and she was absolutely fine. Slapped on factor 50 and then she was in and out of the pool the whole time so was fine. Get aircon in villa/apt and then there is somewhere for them to chill out for a bit if necessary.

What about France somewhere if you're concerned (Dordogne or somewhere so its hot but not boiling).

Gobbledigook · 14/09/2007 19:01

Too late, we have booked the villa! I think they'll be fine as they'll spend the whole time in the pool - all 3 of them are complete water babies. Will just have to slap cream on and make sure they have t-shirts on, even in the pool at times.

We've already said we'd probably bring them inside at the hottest part of the day too, and let them wind down - there's a DVD player and we'll take books and a few toys.

Ooh, am excited that I might actually see some sun - albeit 11 months away!!

We live in Cyprus and it was so hot this year we extended our UK hoilday in August to escape the heat and we are acclimatised!!!!

Gobbledigook · 14/09/2007 19:21

Ok, anyone go to Canaries this August - how hot was it?!

The thing for us though was we live here and couldn't escape it day in day out and escapng to the UK was sooo appealing whereas you are escaping the other way around. I expect it will be quite warm but you will only be there for a week or 2 so you'll probably cope better than us.

You are after all on holiday, as you say in the pool etc, we have to go to work, go shopping, do the housework, go to school etc. Don't want to put a dampner on your excitement, I bet you have a great time

Gobbledigook · 14/09/2007 19:27

Ok, good, you worried me there for a moment!

We are only doing 10 days and, like you say, kids will be in pool the whole time.

I can imagine it's very different when you are going about your normal daily life in the heat - it's bad enough when it's hot in the UK (I think I can just about remember a time it was hot here )
