My dh will be 40 in January and would love to surprise him with a weekend break - something relaxing, romantic, but not too expensive (is this possible)!.....maybe citybreak otherwise somewhere Scottish??

amsterdam was lovely for my husband's 40th. but chilly in april. are you near an airport, because that was my limiting factor - i ended up looking at all the flights leaving heathrow on a friday evening and picking from the destinations. for mine, he took me to a luxury hotel in the uk and that was possibly nicer. have fun planning! i recommend tripadvisor.co.uk to get hotel ideas.

Thanks podpast. Not near a main airport so guess we can look at Glasgow as our nearest option x

I spent my 40th birthday in Florence one January. It was a wonderful trip and a good time to go, as there are very few tourists around. I have also been to Venice in January and, again, found it a very good time to go. Either place would give him a magical birthday treat.

Copenhagen is a lovely city, and quite compact so easy to find your way around. We're going there for dh's 40th birthday in a few weeks.

Is it best to book flights separately then look for deals on hotels?? Whats best for the european city breaks? Thanks x

Barcelona? You get city break but can have a day at beach too...
