Hoping someone has experience re: rules about needing 6 months left on passports to travel -

We're flying to Australia for a 3 week holiday at the end of March. Have just realised that DS's British passport expires in August. He has dual British/Australian nationality and his Australian passport doesn't expire until 2023. Wondering if we should replace his British passport in a hurry before we leave because we may have issues in transit with him having fewer than 6 months remaining on that passport?

.Gov website says:

For entry into Australia, your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. No additional period of validity beyond this is required.

If you are transiting another country on your way to or from Australia, make sure you check the entry requirements for that country. Many countries will only permit entry if you have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport.

Shouldn't he enter Australia on an Australian doc anyway if he has citizenship? That's the norm for most countries (including the UK) for dual nationals.

He’s going to need to travel on his AU passport anyway as he won’t have an entry visa In his UK one.

The only time it might make life easier to present his UK passport is when you land back in the UK, otherwise just use his AU one the whole time.

If you attempt to leave the UK on his UK passport he won’t be allowed entry into the flight as he doesn’t have an Australian visa in that passport.

You need to use his AU passport for every flight / checkin right the way up until he presents at security back in the UK. it’ll be easier to use his UK passport then.

Ok, thank you all! We'll do a fast-track renewal to be sure we don't have any issues along the way.

We used the online passport renewal forms recently and new passport was issued in a week ...

@BookMeOnTheSudExpress it’s not a requirement to enter the UK on a UK passport if you are a dual citizen. It’s certainly easier and probably quicker but not a requirement.
