ESTA application - What state is New York City in?

Hey mumsnetters. I am trying to complete the ESTA to travel to New York and am somewhat confused. One needs to enter a state but I cannot for my life remember (and google apparently can't either) which state NYC is in?

It’s in New York State!

Hence New York, New York (so good they named it twice ...)

New York City is actually in New York county in New York state.

Unlike Washington DC... Which isn't in Washington state. (It took me ages to convince DH of this!)

Washington DC (District of Columbia) a bit of land from Maryland and Virginia

First time I flew to nyc my ticket was to Newark. When we landed, the pilot said Welcome to New Jersey and I panicked!

You don’t actually have to provide any address on the ESTA application. You can write “unknown”.
