Advice for holiday combining LA and Vegas

We’re planning on a family trip to Vegas with either a day trip or overnight trip to the Grand Canyon. We aren’t wanting to drive so would be keen to know recommendations for hotels which are good for families with easy access to the main attractions, that aren’t the most £££. Also if anyone has been in a canyon tour they could recommend, that would be good too.
To complicate matters, my family would also like to visit LA, to see the main sights such as the Hollywood sign etc. I’ve seen a day excursion advertised but that sounds too much travelling. I’ve checked flight prices and the flights from London to LA seem much cheaper than London to Vegas, typically about half the price! You can also get cheap and quick flights from LA to Las Vegas.
So I was thinking of booking flights to LA, spending 2-3 nights there, then flying to Las Vegas for about 5 nights (to include Grand Canyon trip), then back to LA for a couple of nights before flying home.
I was wondering if this sounds ok and not too hectic? We’d need recommendations of where to stay and what to do in LA and how to get from the airports to the cities. As always we are wanting to keep the costs down as much as possible but with still having a good trip. We don’t wasn’t to be traveling about the whole time so not interested in going further afield such as Sam Francisco.
Thanks for the advice!

And one more thing - we would be going in school holidays - when would be the best time of year to visit when it would be warm enough to swim but not uncomfortably hot for waking around?

LA is so spread out managing without a car on just public transport will waste so much time
it will all depend on what sites you want to see

LA without a car will not be fun at all.

Perhaps we should leave LA for another holiday and just have a great trip to Las Vegas. We don’t like traveling around too much. Would there be enough to do in Vegas for a week or so? Would still like to do Grand Canyon or some other trip to see some natural scenery in contrast to Las Vegas.
