We've got some time off and we're looking to go away on Fri/sat for a week. We were planning on going camping in Scotland but to be honest this weather is making me think that would be total madness, especially as DS is only 12 months.

So instead, I was wondering if it would make more sense to rent a holiday cottage instead, maybne in the Lakes as it's only an hour and a half drive as opposed to 6 up to Fort William.

We are fairly skint, any suggestions as to where I can find out about last minute cottage lets? We can't even get a last minute package deal beacuse DS still hasn't got a passport.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

These are in the Lakes, and available next weekend, but v.pricey.
I reckon you could strike a deal with someone - better a cheap let than an empty house.

Hi, had a week in Devon last week which we only booked 7 days in advance. One website I looked at was this one (I am going to do my first link so bear with me!)

www.lastminute-cottages.co.uk

It should be possible to book something reasonable especially as it is no long the school hols. Just so long as you are fairly flexible about where you go you should be OK.

Good luck.

Yes, try Lastminute.com, or Cottages4You have a search facility which enables you to find what is avaialbale now - and they seem to haev v nice, reasonabley priced cottages, too (we booked one through them at v short notice last year)

WendyWeber · 02/09/2007 20:29

If you're not that bothered where you go, ring cottages4you and ask if there are any last-minute cancellations anywhere - they are 45% off if there are any.

(Ring before 9pm and you might get me - 08700 782100)

Have a look on Ebay.

You did get me btw, bb (Not as weird as it sounds, there were only 5 of us left by 9)

Will you be going for Cornwall, Argyll or Cotswolds?

bohemianbint · 03/09/2007 08:22

Hello! You spoke to DP?! Hahahaa....imagine the stuff you could have told him! He said you were very lovely and helpful, by the way!

We're going to go for Cornwall! Am going to call back at 9am...

Awwww, tell him thank you - he was very nice too, I loved how enthusiastic he got (I suspect he thought the 45% off was going to be a wind-up!)

Did you get it then??? Or have you got to wait to hear if it's OK? (Getting hold of owners to confirm can be nerve-wracking)

bohemianbint · 03/09/2007 12:36

Hi! Phoned up this morning, still waiting for confirmation from the owner but fingers crossed it's going to be alright! Have you stayed there then? Cottage looks absolutely lovely. I know the area fairly well, it's a great spot, can't wait!

Hmmm...have just had email, so I presume that means it's gone through?

Yes, email means it's a firm booking - will have directions etc in - hooray!

No, I don't know it but was smitten by the photos and description

WendyWeber · 03/09/2007 14:12

Hope you have a lovely time and good weather - post some pics on here when you get back

Blu · 04/09/2007 15:22

oooh, WW, I wonder if i got you when I booked last year? It was on the last minute basis and the lady was v friendly, and gave me a discount on the insurance which I could have had if i had found the code on another site.....

Cottages4You always look v good.

WendyWeber · 04/09/2007 15:36

I often wonder if people are MNers, Blu - maybe I should slip a codeword into the conversation when they sound like promising contenders!

(If she had a non-Northern accent it could have been me - if you even remember! - but the odds are against it.)

saltire · 04/09/2007 15:39

Cottages 4 you are really good, we've used them the last few times we have been away

Blu · 04/09/2007 15:55

I'm trying to remember the accent - I don't remember it being particularly Northern. It was a tiny but charming and v tasteful flat in Whitstable. I didn't know you worked for C4Y - so am now doubly pleased!

Maybe MN-ers who ring in could say 'is that Wendy?' and you could say 'no - but I do know who you mean'...because the calls might be recorded, mightn't they?

WendyWeber · 04/09/2007 21:24

Oooh, yes, that would work, Blu! (Mind you we have nobody actually called Wendy atm - if we got one it could be a bit trickier )

Thanks for the nice comments about the company - most of our customers are very satisfied with the properties and the owners, but a lot don't comment so it's good to hear!
