Next June, just for long weekend. Would LOVE to go back to New York but can't justify journey for that amount of time so we've decided on a Euro destination.

I really fancy Rome as not ever stayed there but some reviews I've read say it's not very friendly and very dirty. We've both been to Paris before but not toegther. Preferable to Rome or not?

Want to go somewhere not too rip-offy but lots of nice places to see; relaxed atmosphere, plenty of bars, cafes, restaurants, quite romantic....

(not Amsterdam or Prague, have 'done' these!)

Marrakech is supposed to be lovely.

We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary here and it was gorgeous:

Venice - but not in summer
Seville
Reykjavic
or even (it's beautiful)Palma and you can have a day in Soller, great train journey.

aloha · 04/09/2007 15:19

Palma is lovely. Really surprisingly so. And you can get cheap flights and stay in v swanky hotel.

aloha · 04/09/2007 15:20

Seville is very, very hot. Lovel it though. Also Barcelona.

Twinkie1 · 04/09/2007 15:22

I wouldn't go to Rome in the summer.

Paris I don't hink is that great either - very touristy and crowded.

Barcelona is lovely so maybe there or Stockhom - you have to stay at the Grand Hotel if you do - I used to work for a member of the Board of Directors and got a freebie and it was incredible!

Florence and Seville are also fab places for a short break.

belgo · 04/09/2007 15:22

I've just come back from Barcelona and it's one of my favourite cities. Good food (tapas), amazing architecture, and a nice beach.

I wouldn't recommend Bruges or any where else in Belgium, it's lovely, but you just can't rely on the weather.

mcnoodle · 04/09/2007 15:23

Lovel all things Italian - Rome is fabulous, but if you want somewhere smaller, quieter and absolutely beautiful, maybe Siena?

flowerybeanbag · 04/09/2007 15:23

Had my honeymoon in Italy, Pisa, Florence, Rome then Positano.
All wonderful, would probably choose Florence or Positano, depending on whether you are after city break or not.

moulimoo · 04/09/2007 15:31

Bruges, hotel de Tuilereen- perfect!

expatinscotland · 04/09/2007 15:36

Oooo, I am so .

Hope to do this for my 40th in a few years time, too!

Have a lovely weekend whatever you chose!

jenkel · 04/09/2007 16:21

As others have suggested, Venice or Sorrento, been fortunate to go to both and had a fantastic time, Venice most be one of the most romantic cities in Europe, and loved Sorrento, Capri, Pompei, Amalfi Coast.

Have fun choosing.

BellaLasagne · 04/09/2007 16:41

Salzburg is my favourite

newgirl · 05/09/2007 19:05

Rome is fantastic - so much to see and just fab sitting around in courtyards sipping coffees - it might be too hot in June though - not sure about that.

marrackech is amazing for the adventure - def stay in a riad not a modern hotel

filthymindedvixen · 05/09/2007 19:07

Oh you lucky thing! Rome is fantastic but in June would be a bit grim perhaps.
I enjoyed paris in the summer.
But I'm so starved of travel these days, I'd go anywhere - especially if it was a treat

filthymindedvixen · 05/09/2007 19:08

Think I'll start dropping hints to dh now for 3 years' time...he can start saving

aloha · 05/09/2007 19:08

I went to Rome in August (Honeymoon) and blardy loved it. I like hot and I like cities.

oopsiedoopsie · 06/09/2007 07:55

This time of year Venice is lovely

ggglimpopo · 06/09/2007 08:07

Bordeaux is lovely - has just been given UNESCO rating and there is lots to see and do. The town centre is walkable and has some good hotels - the new fandabby one opposite the Opera house smack in the centre of town will open this year and would be a great base. There are the chateaux to visit (the tourist office organises trips), several outstanding restuarants -withnin teetering distance of new hotel - and very good shopping. The weather in JUne is normally brilliant. You will not need a car if you just stay the weekend, unless you want to do the chateaux hopping yourselves, which will cramp your wine tasting sessions(!), as the tram will take you everywhere you need to go. Direct flights from the UK.

meowmix · 06/09/2007 08:16

if early June then Rome would be fine. Istanbul is amazing and I love love love Cairo (it is dirty and it is hot but so fascinating, and the standard of service is amazing)

Milan is beautiful too

sheffmummy · 06/09/2007 10:14

We went to Rome then Positano for our honeymoon and both were really beautiful. Bruges is also fantastic and a bit of romantic secret as a few people have already said.

Venice is great but very busy, we found Verona a bit quieter and really beautiful, seeing a show at the arena is an amazing experience.

Countingthegreyhairs · 06/09/2007 10:50

Madrid is fantastic too

buzzybee · 06/09/2007 11:09

I'd go back to Lisbon like a shot.

Went there 4 months pregnant and hardly showing (I thought) and everyone was so lovely and kind and the food was great...I could go on and on!!
