I think you do need a passport. There was a thread about this recently. I think someome said it was okay going out, few checks etc, but coming home they got into problems due to no passport or photo id or something.

doh.
got a passport for me and DH but nothing for DD.
We are going to Cornwall for a week, but had thought about potentially having a few days in Ireland as well. Not likely now!
