Drive to Canyon from Las Vegas

I was wondering has self-drove from Vegas to the Grand Canyon?

I booked the trip to Vegas as a birthday present for my husband and we have fallen pregnant!

We want to go to the Canyon, but I think the mini bus excursion might be a bit uncomfy with my big belly and the May heat.

We can also hire a car for the fraction of the price of the excursion and can go at our own pace/explore another places if we feel like it.

Is it an ok drive? It's 127 miles from our hotel so not a million miles and I'd happily split the drive with the hubby.

I've done it, its a day's drive but you can stop at places along the way and its nice to have a car to retreat to once you are there.

It's an easy drive.. And quite a boring one to be honest but the view when you get there is worth it.

Hi,
Just done this,it is a long boring drive, but worth it the canyon is spectacular.we hired a soft top mustang and it was the highlight of our holiday.

@Pom1pom2 this us what we are looking at hiring. I'm just think more space and freedom then a minibus with my big baby bump😂

Definitely stop at the hoover dam, on one of the journeys, it is an amazing experience. Its really not a day's drive to get to the canyon. Its about 2.5 hours each way. But there are plenty of things to stop and see too.

Bobbybobbins · 04/02/2020 17:12

I would definitely hire a car - that way you have the freedom to stop off (esp if you need the loo!)

We stayed at the Grand Canyon and hiked down. It was amazing! But definitely worth staying a night IMO

too far for a day, Las Vegas to Grand Canyon village is nearly 5 hours one way and that's where the best scenery and fewest planes are. Stay overnight in Flagstaff and visit Grand Canyon village from there, I think there's even a park and ride now. You can see loads (weather permitting) from the rim which is of course a level walk.

BTW are your travel insurers and airline ok with the pregnancy?

okiedokieme · 04/02/2020 18:38

Yes, with toddlers. We stayed overnight at the Grand Canyon. Visited the hoover dam and Carson city en route

Workplaceworries · 04/02/2020 19:31

@mencken yes you can fly up to 28 weeks with a single pregnancy without a doctors certificate and my travel insurance covers myself if anything pregnancy related happens and also the birth/care of my child if I was in the position to have to have a very early labour (very unlikely at that stage anyway!)

I've been looking at hotels and it's a lot more affordable than I thought so I'm found to have a look online for routes and get planning.

Thank you all!

Definitely do it,you won’t regret it on the way back we drove part of Route 66.Another tick off the bucket list.As other people have said it is a 5 hour trip there and another 5 hours back. There is another rim closer to Vegas but it is worth going further.Have an amazing time .

We drove to Williams and spent the night there (comfort inn has an indoor pool), got up really early and drove up to the canyon village (about an hour's dtive) as the sun rose. Was there early enough to avoid the worst of the crowds.

mencken · 05/02/2020 12:42

good stuff - enjoy! The Rough Guide (from the library) is excellent and will tell you lots of facts about the best bits. OK, the 'west rim' will still be scenic but the real picture postcard Grand Canyon is in the middle and that's where you want to be.

the park site is nps.gov/grca

We have done the drive from Las Vegas to Grand Canyon. We stopped off at the Hoover Dam.
We booked an overnight in The Red Feather Lodge. We arrived about 5.30 in the afternoon. Checked in and headed straight to the Canyon about a 15 minute drive away to catch the sunset. Which was awesome and so peaceful. They have buses on site that take you to various lookouts if you want to use them.
The next morning we headed back again to spend a few hours in the Canyon before heading back to Vegas.
We found it a relaxing way to do it and maybe give this a thought with you being pregnant.

SpoonBlender · 11/02/2020 00:36

Yeah, we've done that - we stayed near the Grand Canyon, it's way too far to go back and forth in a day. Although you can get flights from near LV all the way to the GC, zoom around, then back again.

Hoover Dam is great (unless it's over 40C, in which case it's slightly frightening). If you want a day out in the countryside after the baffling horrors of Las Vegas, drive out to the Spring Mountains where there are plenty of trails and waterfalls.
