Family holiday in Austria in summer

Hi,

Does anyone have experience of a family holiday in Austria? It would be in July.

DCs will be 8, 6 and nearly 4. We would like somewhere with lots to do for kids in the local area and in the hotel.

Advice and recommendations welcome, many thanks.

I have visited Austria a few times as I have family there. It’s very beautiful and obviously landlocked but the lakes are clean and set up for bathing. It’s very clean too and the hospitality is fab . I have been to Salzburg and Vienna mainly but don’t think you can go too far wrong.

Saalbach hinterglemm is great in the summer - the joker card (summer access card) gets you up the cable cars every day rather than some resorts that only allows the summer card holder one day on the lifts so you can go up and down the mountains. Each cable car stop has something child friendly at the top like a playground (mixed ages) or a treasure trail with stickers etc, free crazy golf, free bus use, free outdoor flume pool.. can you tell we’ve done this twice? Second time was with our 3year old and she loved it... all the rest houses up the mountains cater for kids and have playgrounds..

Basically what I didn’t realise until we got there was how many Germans, Belgians (most notably while we were there) and other Europeans take their children on walking holidays in the alps so the children are possibly better looked after than the adults (certainly in our hotel the kids buffet was excellent etc).

Really helpful, thank you both.

Which hotel did you stay in @vroc81 ?

We have stayed in Fuschl, which is in the Lake District of Austria. Very close to Salzburg. probably more to do at the neighbouring lake St Wolfgang. It's the area where the Sound of Music was filmed.

Also stayed near Seefeld, which is close to Innsbruck.

It's a truly stunning stunning country. I can highly recommend the Carinthia area in the south of the country. There is so much to see and do and you can buy the Karnten card which once purchased gives free access to loads of attractions www.kaerntencard.at/sommer/en/weekly-cards/ - it's a really reasonable cost. The weather will be hot but expect some thunder storms in the evenings and make sure you take warm clothing when you go to the mountain tops as it will likely be rather chilly. Personally I'd book self catering accommodation via something like booking.com - there is at least 1 supermarket in virtually every village so stocking up for the family wouldn't be difficult. There are loads of places to eat out at too.

Zell am See - we went last Summer it was one of the best holidays we’ve had. Lots of cable cars up in to the mountains - we have a 3 and 5 year old and they loved it. There would be lots to do for older kids too. We stayed at hotel stadt Wien which is family run and caters well for children but has a high standard of food, encourages you to take a packed lunch from the breakfast for your adventure in the mountains, also has a small petting farm and a little pool/saunas etc. We also got a ‘summer card’ or something which got us free travel on most cable cars, buses and a lot of them attractions- it was included in our holiday. Trying to go back 2020!

We've stayed in schladming which was beautiful. Not yet been with children though so can't comment on activities for them.

The Kinder hotels are good - we stayed in the one in Hintertux for few days in May, that location is more for a few days but has snow all year, cable cars, ice palace, all 5 mins walk then tourist train, playroom and massive playground at hotel. If hire car can do white water rafting etc. Excellent food. Beautiful scenery. We flew to Innsbruck.
