Avios points

I recently returned from a long haul holiday with British Airways. We had some problems with the hotel and we were moved to a different hotel. By doing this we incurred additional costs, cabs. At the time I was told BA would reimburse me for these costs.

I've been offered 150000 Avios points as compensation, no cash for the cabs.

Are these points worth having? Not sure if I'm happy with this offer.

You could get a return to Mauritius in Club World with those points. I'm a big fan and will use my points to fly First to the Far East next year. Look at the Head for Points site, lots of info about how to maximise your Avios spend before you dismiss them and ask BA for monetary compensation.

Are you able to travel off peak season? If not, they're fairly useless for "free" flights unless you're lucky or not fussy.

They do work pretty well for upgrades/money off flights, but it depends on how often you travel if that's any use to you!

Thanks for the information. We will be able to travel off peak after this summer. I'll start looking!

150,000 avios is a lot! You basically have free flights somewhere decent. I’d take that rather than the cab fares! You can check where this will take on via their web site. Have a play around and see where you can go. We have always used them and had some excellent value out of them.

That is a good offer! I am an avid avoid collector and really value this. Only thing to bear in mind is that you still have to pay taxes, but it is good value for a club world/ first redemption

We've just used 90000 avios for 3 people to fly to canaries in the summer (peak time). The equivalent in money was £1200 for this particular flight.

mysteryfairy · 20/12/2019 11:02

You won’t have free flights...you’ll have to pay tax on any flights - at least £500 for long haul.

Might be worth a lot, but could be difficult to use when it suited you & would incur additional costs anyway.
If it was me, I'd push for cash.

Depends if you will use them / how much extra you spent. We had something like 46,000 after flights to Australia and used them for our next holiday to buy 2 nights for 4 of us in a hotel in Malaysia (so c£200). For flights it wasn't worth it for us, BA flights were £1000 more expensive for 4 of us so went with another airline. Just have a look on BA site and see what you could buy.
