Malaga area: Recommendations for where to stay

We are looking at flying in to Malaga airport towards the end of February with our 2 year old and 5 year old for a week or so. We are looking for recommendations for where to stay.

The most important thing for us is that it is somewhere which the DC will enjoy. We like to explore so if there's parks, beaches etc it would be great. We're not that into resorts. An ideal would be a village/small town close to Malaga with some facilities and good public transport links as ideally we don't hire a car (though we will if needed).

So help! Any recommendations for where to stay (and also things to do)?

I went to Nerja a good few years ago, and there were children of a similar age in our group. Not too big a town, beaches and a few things to do. Some caves if I remember right? About 45 mins from Malaga I think, and lots of villas in the area.

Torremolinos is great in low season and really close to Malaga with great transport links. Plenty to do in the area too.

So Nerja and Torremolinos sound like 2 areas to look into. Any suggestions for palces to stay in either?

We go for cheap and cheerful SC accommodation, not to everyone's taste! At that time of year, you might want to try and find somewhere with a heated pool?

We stayed in La Carihuela in Torremolinos this summer. We stayed in a lovely little hotel called the Hotel Cabello in a lovely spot just across from the beach and near to very good restaurants.

The train station is a 10 minute walk away and you can catch the train to torremolinos from the airport. It’s extremely easy to use the trains as they simply run back and fore along the coast. It’s about 4 stops on the train from Malaga airport to torremolinos Centro which is the train stop you need. Use google maps to walk downhill to the hotel then.

Can highly recommend the hotel, resort etc and when you want to visit Malaga city or Fuengirola in the other direction the next then train is the easiest way to do it (and cheapest!)

I love Nerja. We normally stay in one of the apartments on the Fuentes de Nerja complex near Torrecilla beach. (Can either book through their own management site or there are some privately owned eg homeaway, or the trip advisor one)

It's some distance from the airport though (an hour?) and wouldn't be good in public transport whereas you can easily get to Torremolinos by train / taxi and there is a train runs right down that coast.

Would highly recommend sunset beach club. Went with a 15 month old and it was brilliant

Nerja or up in the hills above it, Frigliana.

We booked a transfer with Nerja taxis and booked a car seat. Couldn't have been smoother!
