Looking to stay next May - 4 nights.

First time in Rome. Me and DH.

Would like to stay somewhere central and a fairly decent hotel, but nowhere that will break the bank!

Recommendations please Grin

I’ve done a couple of apartments and the hotel Ponte Sisto and it was great. Nice rooftop bar and good sized bathrooms. Near the river so you couldn’t get too lost. Easy walk to attractions both sides of the river ( the great bars and resturants of Trastevere and Patheon, Piazza Navona etc.

Rome fir obvious reasons doesn’t do swimming pools and the buildings are ancient so some quirkiness is to be expected. They have planning regs that have to take into account everything being 2000 years old..

Don’t pick a hotel near one of the main roads - very noisy and massive. Plenty on side streets, pedestrian raids and near squares.
You don’t need to be near any of the attractions - they are all very easily walkable to each other. It helps to be equidistant really.
I’d stay by the river. It’s a good landmark to help you find your hotel- easy to get lost in the little lanes.

@Leflic - thank you so much for the lengthy and very informative reply. Much appreciated, especially as we have no idea where to start!

we have been a couple of times and always stayed in apartments around the Pantheon area. Its pretty central with most places in walking distance with lots of good places to eat out. have a look at Rome lofts for nice places to book. TBH I just wouldnt waste my money on an hotel. so many great places to eat, the food market etc. You can do an airbnb search on pantheon and see what comes up for your price range/number of people.

We stayed in a little apartment just off Piaza Navona run by Easyinrome and booked through Booking.com. Nice distance to most things and some reasonably priced restaurants nearby.
