Will I need passport numbers to select seats - virgin

I've booked a holiday for October 2020. We can book seats from 20 December this year but DDs passport expires April 2020 so she'll have a new one by the time we travel. Now they aren't adding the remaining months left on to your renewed passport I'm loathed to renew it now, will I need the passport number to select seats does anyone know?

Passport numbers for seat selection are not normally needed, you need the booking reference.

I did not need them when I booked seats in October 18 for August 19 with Virgin.

I have just booked KLM seats for August 2020 and did not need to provide our passport numbers.

No. I selected seats for next year and didn’t have to add passport numbers or any info aside from our names.
