Costa Rica - Caribbean coast recommendations?

I'm planning a trip with the family (DCs will be 10 and 12) for next summer. I've managed to find loads of advice about where to go on the Pacific Coast and the central region but virtually nothing (except for Tortuguero) on the Caribbean side.

Has anyone spent any time on the Caribbean coast at all and could recommend any particular areas or hotels? I've read that it has a more authentic / less American feel than the Pacific coast so I think it would possibly suit our family a little better.
