Im looking to stay in Galveston Texas for one night before flying back home from Huston next year , this is after a 2 week trip staying in air b&b's and on a ranch .
Does any one have any recommendations or any other ideas on places to stay for our last night close to Houston airport ?

Galveston is actually around 70 miles from Houston.

I would look into staying in Houston's downtown area for the one night before you fly home.

I lived in Galveston for about a year in 2006/07. It's good fun for a day - there is an 'old town' (rebuilt after the 1900 storm destroyed most of theb town) and some interesting beach bars etc. Depending on the season you want to watch out for mosquitoes or jellyfish. Let me know if you have any specific questions, happy to help.

Thanks for your replies , i think from what you have said it might be best to stay in Houston as our flight is quite early in the morning Smile

Yes, for an early morning flight Houston may be better. There is motorway all the way to the airport but it can easily take 1 1/2 hours to get there from Galveston. You also need to go across the bridge, so an accident could really hold you up.

Hope you have the chance to visit Austin - really fun city, lots of live music. Very liberal politically, as opposed to the rest of Texas. (Had some interesting discussions with the locals during my time there).

Oh, and definitely have the Oreo Milkshake from Sonic. Still dream of it sometimes.

The oreo milkshake sounds fab , we are starting in Houston followed by Dallas , san Antonio , a week in Bandera on a ranch , going onto austin then back to Houston To fly home . We're so looking forward to the trip . Thanks for your advice , Houston really looks the best place to send our last night Smile

If you stay in Houston you can visit the NASA Space Centre.

I heartily recommend it. Loads to see and great for both adults and children.

When I went I was lucky enough to see astronauts trading in the massive "pool" that houses a space shuttle - it was amazing.

There's lot of interactive activities (I remember the simulator where you can try and land the shuttle) and a restaurant where you can try "space food".

I also remember being amazed by how small the Apollo crew pod was - I can't imagine being crammed in there for days on end.
