Heraklion airport

Advice please- found a lovely hotel in Crete. However I am a v v v nervous flyer, only just started flying again last year after many years not doing. I've heard horror stories about Heraklion airport although we would be flying BA. Is it bad enough that we should avoid and choose a different destination? Really dont want to go bavkwards and put myself off flying again. Thank you!

Went to Crete a couple of years and flew in to Heraklion, I didn’t notice anything wrong with it. On a separate note- Knossos Palace is worth a visit

It's really not that bad. There can be long queues, particularly to board, they have this strange system of lining you up and then not taking you anywhere but other than that no different from any other airport I've been to recently (go away 4 times a year and normally go to Crete through heraklion twice a year.). Toilets have always been clean recently and food choices have improved plus staff are always friendly. Where are you looking at staying?

Heraklion can be a bit busy but it's no different from many other airports in Greece or Europe.

The only thing I found was that the toilets were really smelly and dirty.

I never noticed anything particularly wrong with it when I went to Crete a couple of years ago.

It's quite small and gets very crowded. I flew out of there earlier this week and did wonder just how grim it would be in the height of summer. I have bad knees and I was very aware of how few escalators and lifts were working. Steps and a case is not a good combination for me. But it's only a couple of hours and, I suspect, it's like a lot of European airports serving very busy holiday destinations.
